We're proud of our quality faculty. They are world-class researchers and teachers who have chosen Oregon State's School of EECS for its unique environment.
Exceptionally Collegial Faculty
The consensus here is that we have an exceptionally collaborative atmosphere. Faculty members find it easy to build strong teams involving colleagues not just from EECS, but from other departments, colleges, and organizations.
 World-Class Researchers
EECS researchers are top-notch. Our faculty have won numerous research awards, including 17 IEEE awards, 11 NSF CAREER awards, and 25 research and scholarly contributions awards. Six of our faculty are IEEE Fellows and two are Fellows of the ACM. Our faculty members currently hold 85 patents, with another 30 pending.
Industry Experience
Many of our faculty members have worked in industry, some over long periods of time. This makes them all the better as researchers and teachers, since they can apply bring a "real world" perspective to both the classroom and the research lab.
 Outstanding Teachers
Our faculty members know the quality of our teaching is as important as our research accomplishments. We have the results to prove it. Over the past decade, EECS faculty members received 16 teaching awards from Oregon State and other organizations (such as IEEE). Many of the awardees were chosen by the students themselves. Instructor Jimmy Eggerton teaches the first in a series of three Electrical Fundamentals classes, required for students in several disciplines. At the end of the term, nearly 100 of his students sent a petition to the department head, requesting that Eggerton teach the next class in the sequence, too. Many of our professors, including Eggerton, Roger Traylor, Mario Magaña, Jon Herlocker, and Paul Cull were given teaching awards by their students.
 Strong Leadership
One of the cornerstones of building a topnotch engineering school is attracting department heads who are the best and brightest in their fields, born leaders who infuse entire departments with vision and excitement, who inspire faculty, students, and the greater community alikepeople who burn so brightly they illuminate the way to the top.
This is precisely how College of Engineering's Dean, Ron Adams, describes EECS Director Terri Fiez. "A ball of fire," Adams says. "Terri is spectacular!"
"Ultimately," Fiez says, "we have to create an environment that gives students and faculty opportunities to be creative, to explore and be successful and feel what success feels like, to get excited about what they're doing."
Adams himself came to Oregon State following a long tenure in industry (he was vice-president at Tektronix). Jim Johnson, former Intel vice-president and Oregon Site Manager, says the College now has an enhanced understanding of the need to develop symbiotic relationships with industry. Johnson says that Oregon State's emphasis on work-ready engineers is a direct result of Adams' business experience, and an ideal bridge to industry as the Knowledge Economy spreads.
 Skilled Staff
At Oregon State, you'll find that everyone is committed to upholding highest standards for their jobs. Our graduate coordinator for computer science, Nancy Brown is a wonderful example of the excellence of our staff. One student noted that Brown's professionalism "sealed the deal" for him in deciding to choose Oregon State for graduate school. Staff members Tina Batten, Manfred Dittrich, Todd Shechter, Ferne Simendinger, Chris Tasker, Fran Saveriano, and Gale Sumida have won awards over the past several years from the College of Engineering for their outstanding performance.
