Oregon wins $40M for coveted wave energy test center off Newport
The test center, planned for about half-dozen miles off the coast at Newport, would have four berths for the testing of wave energy converters in big-wave conditions. A subsea cable will carry up to 20 megawatts of power ashore. "We're hoping it's going to stimulate a lot of interest and activity with wave energy in Oregon," said Dan Hellin, assistant director for test operations at the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center, the Oregon State University-based institution that is heading up the test center project. Intel shows power, promise of virtual reality at CES
Intel provided VR headsets and computing systems to more than 250 attendees at the press event and walked the crowd through several demonstrations and announcements. All of the immersive demos highlighted what CEO Brian Krzanich envisions as the future of entertainment, gaming, travel and even work (think: remote inspections using drones equipped with VR cameras). Winter 2017 HWeekend - Gadgets and Gizmos!
HWeekend returns January 21-22! This free hardware development competition brings students of all levels and majors together with industry and faculty mentors to create something new. Students work together in teams to create a marketable project they can demonstrate and pitch to judges at the end of the weekend. The theme for this event is Gadgets and Gizmos! Come together with a group of friends to solve a real problem or just to have some fun. Some example projects could be: an automatic door control for the disabled, an anti-theft bike alarm, some cool lights for your skateboard, or a webpage that tells you if your house is unlocked. Cultural Heritage Research in the Netherlands
This unique 8-week opportunity will provide selected students with a valuable interdisciplinary experience abroad with cultural heritage scientists who are leaders in their fields. Each participant will have dedicated American and Dutch mentors. MIT Summer Research Internships
The MIT Materials Processing Center and the Center for Materials Science and Engineering sponsor a summer research internship program for rising junior and senior undergraduates in science and engineering fields. This challenging program brings promising students to MIT to learn and perform research in laboratories in a broad selection of materials science subfields. Research Experience for Undergraduates, Computational Sensing
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is inviting applications for summer 2017. In our program, students will experience research and other career-enhancing activities in an interdisciplinary environment with special focus on Computational Sensing. Students will be challenged to make sense of human behaviors and cognitive processes with hardware, software, and complex thinking, exploring the nexus of computational science, scientific practice, and the human experience. Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University
The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, polymers, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, molecular electronics and biomaterials. While there are many REU programs, the NU-MRSEC stands out in offering students an interdisciplinary research experience. Students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or engineering who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. Applications are due Feb. 15, 2017.

NSF Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advance Self-Powered Systems of Intergrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) - North Carolina State University
The summer REU program offers research opportunities for domestic undergraduates from institutions outside of the ASSIST center. The program is open to any student who is majoring in a science or engineering-related field. REU students will be immersed in a 10-week intensive research experience at one of ASSIST’s partner institutions where they will experience the various aspects of university research. Students will be partnered with a faculty mentor based on their interests, they will conduct a research project, and they will present their work at a student symposium at the end of the summer. Interdisciplinary Micro/Nano-manufacturing Program Addressing Challenges Today (IMPACT) - University of Louisville
The goal of IMPACT is to recruit and train next-generation students into the interdisciplinary field of advanced micro/nano-manufacturing through exciting hands-on research projects which demonstrate how this remarkable miniaturization technology can be used to create new devices and systems capable of "impacting" the grand challenges of today in energy, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, security and the environment. Although the field of micro/nanotechnology has been around for several decades, its commercial successes have been primarily limited to the fields of semiconductors and microelectronics. Only recently have researchers begun to expand the application areas of this attractive manufacturing technology from the 2.5D field of semiconductors to the true 3D world of MEMS, microfluidics, sensors and other non-semiconductor disciplines. 2017 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Computational Sensing and Medical Robotics at The Johns Hopkins University
The REU program is an intensive ten-week program of laboratory research and instruction. In the program, each REU student receives hands-on laboratory research experience under guidance from Hopkins faculty and graduate student mentors. Participants will also receive classes on ethics in research and technical communication. The students will have the opportunity to go on local visits to labs. Deadline: February 17, 2017.

The summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of Tennessee's Engineering Research Center, CURENT, provides an opportunity for students to perform electrical engineering or computer science research with CURENT's award-winning faculty and graduate students. QESST Engineering Research Center - Arizona State University
The QESST Engineering Research Center offers undergraduates the opportunity to participate in solar energy research. Bridge the gap between the typical “research” devices and commercial solar cells, allowing fabrication and analysis of technologies on commercial-size devices and commercial equipment. Students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university with at least one year completed by June and at least one more semester before graduation after the summer. Solid-State Devices for Electronics, Photonics, and Magnetics Technology - Clemson University
The SURE program will provide students the opportunity to pursue ten weeks of directed research in the areas of electronic, photonic, and magnetic devices, including material and device design, processing, characterization, and modeling. Faculty members on the REU team currently conduct independent, interdisciplinary, and industry-coordinated studies ranging from fundamental materials and physics to functional devices, circuits, and systems. This has been facilitated by linking physics and materials processing programs to integrated multifunctional devices and circuits at the micro and nanometer scale. If so, UConn’s Entrepreneurial REU is for you! Innovative Engineering Using Renewable Resources - University of Alabama
This REU Site at The University of Alabama involves research projects on renewable resources, with a particular focus on bamboo. All student research projects will involve bamboo. This theme was chosen because of the interest and activities centered around bamboo at UA and in Alabama over the past few years. A wide spectrum of project topics will allow undergraduate students from multiple engineering disciplines to work together on problems with broad societal impact. While the project topics will engage students in multiple disciplines, the theme is focused and allows students to work collectively on exciting and relevant problems. Summer Engineering Research Experiences in Transportation Electrification - University of Maryland

Nautilus Science and Engineering Internship Program
The Nautilus Science and Engineering Internship Program aims to train undergraduate and graduate students studying ocean science, engineering and video/film in the at-sea environment. Intern positions entail 2-5 week periods working aboard E/V Nautilus as Data Loggers, ROV Pilots, or Video Engineers. Web Developer - OSU Extended Campus
The Web Developer provides programming and multimedia support for OSU Extended Campus programmatic and course needs. The department is expanding its teaching and research in the areas of data analytics, machine learning, cybersecurity, internet of things, cloud and virtual environments, and mobile computing systems.
