Detection, deterrent system helps eagles, wind turbines coexist
Oregon State University researchers said Monday they have taken a key step toward helping wildlife coexist more safely with wind power generation by demonstrating the success of an impact detection system that uses vibration sensors mounted to turbine blades. Corresponding author Roberto Albertani and collaborators at the OSU College of Engineering and the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science’s Hatfield Marine Science Center have created an integrated sensor system that can tell if a bird or bat hits a turbine. Albertani is working with Sinisa Todorovic, associate professor of computer science at OSU, and Matthew Johnston, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, on what they hope will be a major breakthrough in a safer-for-wildlife expansion of wind energy worldwide. From the file room to the boardroom
Twelve years ago, Ingrid Scheel was burned out in an engineering degree program on campus at Oregon State University, and she was working part time filing papers and doing office maintenance at a small fiber optic sensor firm near Portland. Fast forward a dozen years, and Ingrid holds two degrees from Oregon State, one in English and one in electrical engineering. Those papers she used to file? Now she signs them as the company’s vice president. Introduction to Genome Biology Course for EECS Students
"Introduction to Genome Biology" (BOT499/599, Spring 2018) was designed for EECS students who are interested in the genomics/molecular-biology domain. Paid Research, Fall 2018, Applied Magnetics Lab
The Applied Magnetics Laboratory is at the forefront of investigating the feasibility of inkjet printing custom magnetic materials for devices known as graded-index lenses. (Just like the glasses we wear on our noses help focus light waves, graded-index lenses can be designed to help focus or otherwise manipulate microwaves.) Amongst, many other sophisticated and novel applications, these graded-index lenses can be used for customizing device-to-device communication.
