Okta nabs ScaleFT to build out ‘Zero Trust’ security framework
Okta, the cloud identity management company, announced today it has purchased a startup called ScaleFT [co-founded by Russell Haering (CS '11)] to bring the Zero Trust concept to the Okta platform. While Zero Trust isn’t exactly new to a cloud identity management company like Okta, acquiring ScaleFT gives them a solid cloud-based Zero Trust foundation on which to continue to develop the concept internally. Thought summer life for college students is all about sunbathing, barbeques, and binge-watching Netflix? Not so much. Just ask senior Hanna Bennett, who spent three months on a software engineering team with tech company CBT Nuggets. Hanna was one of three OSU-Cascades interns who spent their summer with CBT Nuggets, a developer of online IT training platforms. Beyond 40 Hours
Todd Shechter, Director of Information Technology, College of Engineering
“He might have survived, or he might have succumbed to exhaustion, dehydration, or hypothermia,” said Todd Shechter (’99 B.S., Management Information Systems), a member of the all-volunteer Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit (CMRU). For Shechter, who is from Fairbanks, Alaska, rescuing people runs in the family. His father was a fire chief and his brother is a paramedic. Netflix is the brand where techies most want to work
Netflix is the hottest brand for job seekers in the tech industry, according to a new report from Hired.com. The streaming service moved up from fifth place last year, per Hired. Netflix came in with an rating of 86, while Google came in second with 83. Filling out the top 10 are Tesla, SpaceX, Airbnb, Apple, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Amazon and Hulu. The Business Journals

Microsoft AI Idea Challenge Contest
The Microsoft AI Idea Challenge is a competition for developers, students, professionals and data scientists seeking innovative, breakthrough artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. Preference will be given for solutions developed on Microsoft AI Platform and services. The Microsoft AI Idea Challenge is looking for AI solutions across all use cases. The top three ideas will each receive prizes (please see below for the prizes), plus an opportunity to present the idea with Microsoft on AI Lab. The Microsoft AI Challenge is accepting submissions between August 13 – October 12, 2018. Individuals or teams are required to submit a working AI model, test dataset, any demo app and a demo video (max. three minutes long) to qualify for the competition.

Campus Analytics Challenge: Live Green and Live Happy
The Wells Fargo challenge aims to promote environmental sustainability, which includes accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Taking individual actions can encourage collective responsibility to help achieve this. Using the data (which will be provided prior to launch), create a machine learning algorithm that minimizes carbon footprint for each customer while maintaining their total quality of life.

ASEE Video Contest
For ASEE’s 125th Anniversary Celebration, we are asking students to create a video that shows where engineering education will be in 25 years! Undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students are encouraged to submit a 90-second video where you creatively explore these topics. The winning video will be shown at the 2019 ASEE Annual Conference in Tampa and the winning team (up to two people) will win a trip to the conference, along with $3000. SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

Microsoft Research Fellowship Program
This year Microsoft Research has expanded its funding support for students by creating the new Microsoft Research Ada Lovelace Fellowship in addition to the improved Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship. For both awards, students’ research must be closely related to the research topics carried out by Microsoft Research; we are particularly interested in proposals related to Systems & Networking and AI (including Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and Robotics) as well as interdisciplinary extensions to them. Nominations are still open, and PhD students must be nominated by their universities and applications submitted by the department chair’s office by October 9, 2018.

NCWIT Collegiate Award
The NCWIT Collegiate Award honors the outstanding computing accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate women. Conferred annually, the award recognizes technical contributions to projects that demonstrate a high level of innovation and potential impact. Each winner receives $10,000 in cash, and each honorable mention receives $2,500 in cash. Students may apply online, beginning on September 1, 2018 and no later than 8:00 p.m. MDT on Monday, October 15, 2018. Endorsement from a project advisor is REQUIRED and due no later than 8:00 p.m. MDT on Monday, October 22, 2018.

IBM PhD Fellowship Award
Strong collaboration with faculty, students and universities is vital to IBM. The IBM PhD Fellowship Program advances this collaboration by recognizing and supporting exceptional PhD students who want to make their mark in promising and disruptive technologies. Focus areas include the following topics of particular interest: AI / Cognitive Computing, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Data Science / Big Data / Analytics, Internet of things, Quantum Computing, Security. A fellowship includes a stipend for two academic years (2019-2020 and 2020-2021) and, in the US, an education allowance for year one (2019-2020). Nomination deadline: October 25, 2018.

Scholarship program will send Portland women to technical conferences
PDX Women in Tech is kicking off a scholarship program to send members to conferences they otherwise might not be able to afford, an effort to improve diversity in an industry that remains overwhelmingly male. PDXWIT is offering to pay up to $2,500 to help finance attendees' trips. Applications are due by Oct. 31, with winners notified by December.

The Rockefeller University - Fellow Position
The Center for Studies in Physics and Biology, at The Rockefeller University, expects to have a small number of postdoctoral fellowships available for appointments in September 2019. We are seeking theoretical physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists with a demonstrable interest in the interface between their discipline and biology. The Fellows are to be at that stage of career as to function as independent members of the Center, free to work alone or in collaboration with any members of The Rockefeller University faculty. Application deadline: November 30.

Symantec Fellowship
We will be offering multiple one-year fellowship awards for Ph.D. students pursuing innovative research with applications to security and privacy, using techniques from cryptography, systems, machine learning, human sciences, and other areas. The fellowship provides up to $20,000 USD that may be used to cover one year of the student's tuition and to reimburse research expenses incurred by the student. In addition, we plan to award all fellowship recipients a separate salaried internship with Symantec. The application deadline is November 30, 2018.

Department of Defense (DoD) SMART Scholarship Program
The SMART Scholarship Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in STEM disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed by the Department of Defense upon degree completion. SMART Scholars will receive: a full tuition scholarship while in school; an annual stipend; summer research internships; a job after graduating in their STEM field at a cutting edge Department of Defense Facility. Deadline to apply is December 1, 2018.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program
For more than 20 years, the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program has provided students with fellowship opportunities to gain hands-on research experience with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy. During these 10-week energy fellowships, selected candidates train under the mentorship of program officials and scientists on focused research projects. Application deadline: December 17, 2018.

Winter Data Science Fellowship Opportunity
The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. This is a pooled posting. That means it will stay open for several months and we will pull applicants from the “pool” for interviews as openings occur, until the closing date. The Center for Applied Systems and Software (CASS) exists as a student internship program. Faculty Research Assistant - NACSE
