OSU starts fall term
Wendy Xu and Austin Whitesell are in a program that OSU is hoping will also be far from average: its robotics graduate program. Wednesday marked the start of the program’s second year, and the start of fall term at OSU. Xu came to the robotics program from a computer science background, in which she worked on human and computer interaction. At OSU she is transitioning to working in the field of human and robot interaction, which she said is a less developed field. Corvallis Gazette-Times

OSU Ecampus named nation’s best value in online education
Oregon State University’s distance education program has been named the nation’s best online college in terms of value by ValueColleges.com, an organization that provides in-depth analysis and rankings on affordability and quality in higher education. Come learn firsthand from a Google Software Engineer! We’ll also share info about some of the opportunities we have for technical students. There will be pizza at the lunch event and swag for all!

HWeekend
HWeekend returns October 8-9! This hardware development competition brings students of all levels and majors together with industry and faculty mentors to create something new. Students work together in teams to create a marketable project they can demonstrate and pitch to judges at the end of the weekend. This term’s HWeekend will target projects that can be submitted to national competitions to show off what OSU students can produce. HWeekend is free event sponsored by of the College of Engineering and the College of Business. More info: webpage, video.

Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium’s Safety Competition
All OSU undergraduate students are invited to submit an entry to the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium’s Safety Competition to help raise awareness of the risks of roadway departure crashes — crashes that occur after a vehicle crosses and edge or center line. Entries include one video 20 to 30 seconds in length, a series of five tweets or Instagram posts, and one poster 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions. All entries are due by Oct. 21, 2016 and must be students’ original work. Details are available at http://depts.washington.edu/pactrans/students/safety-competition/.

Winter Data Science Fellowship Opportunity
The Data Incubator is an intensive 8 week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries. In response to the overwhelming interest in our earlier sessions, we will be holding another fellowship. Anyone who has already obtained a masters or PhD degree or who is within one year of graduating with a masters or PhD is welcome to apply.

Insight Data Engineering Fellows Program
The Insight Data Engineering Fellows Program is a tuition-free Fellowship for computer scientists and engineers looking to transition to careers in data engineering. Over the last 4 years, we have helped over 600 graduate students and postdocs who are all now data scientists and engineers at over 200 leading data companies across the United States. We would be happy to have graduates from Oregon State attend Insight. Application deadline: November 3.

2017 Symantec Fellowships
Symantec will award Symantec Research Labs (SRL) Graduate Fellowships to outstanding students pursuing innovative research in security, cryptography, machine learning, data mining, and information security. The fellowship provides up to $20,000 USD that may be used to cover one year of the student's tuition fees and to reimburse research expenses incurred by the student. In addition, we plan to award all fellowship recipients a separate salaried internship with Symantec. The application deadline is December 2, 2016.

NSA Mathematics & Computer Science Student Scholarship
$500 - Open to currently enrolled students working toward a degree (AA,AS, BA,BS, MS, PhD) in the fields of computer science, computer engineering, or mathematics. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Application deadline: September 30.

NSA Electrical Engineering Student Scholarship
$500 - Open to currently enrolled students pursuing a degree in the field of electrical engineering. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Application deadline: September 30.

AfterCollege STEM Inclusion Scholarship
$500 - Open to currently enrolled students working toward a degree in a field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics from a group underrepresented in their field of study. Underrepresented groups may be defined by: gender, race, ethnic background, disability, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, nationality and other non-visible differences. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Application deadline: September 30.

AfterCollege Succurro Scholarship
$500 - Open to currently enrolled students in an accredited program, working toward a degree (AA, AS, BA, BS, MA, MS, MFA, PhD, MD, JD, etc.) in any discipline. Minimum 2.5 GPA. Application deadline: September 30.

Workshop for NSF GRFP Applicants

The Graduate School is offering two workshops to help OSU students prepare competitive applications for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Spaces are limited; registration is required.

Math Learning Center Tutor
This recruitment will be used to fill part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Student Support Services (Math Learning Center Tutor) positions for the Mathematics Department at Oregon State University (OSU). Students go to the learning center to acquire help with math homework, complete exams, and to work on assignments. Tutors are employed to help tutor Mathematics students.

TA for Foundations of Elementary Mathematics
This recruitment will be used to fill part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant (TA for Foundations of Elementary Mathematics) positions for the Mathematics Department at Oregon State University. Student Information Technology (Libraries Research Intern)
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) Student Information Technology (Libraries Research Intern) position for the Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries and Press at Valley Library. The Libraries Research Intern will help reveal OSU’s rich history as documented in its publications. The OSU Libraries & Press seeks an undergraduate intern for Fall Term 2016 to create the prototype of a web-based data visualization and analysis tool for the impact of ETDs to demonstrate to interested parties.

Part-Time Developer - Quicklet
Quicklet is looking for a part-time full-stack engineer who is interested in helping us build a cloud-based invoicing and light ERP functionality that interfaces directly with QuickBooks Desktop. You must be willing to work remotely and independently. Technology (MakerSpace) Part-Time Programming Intern - Independence Public Library
The selected Intern will explore existing MakerSpace programs and make recommendations for purchase of equipment and materials. They will be responsible for the development of S.T.E.M. based programming kits to meet the needs of children, teens and young adults. These kits will include equipment, materials and user guides for multiple projects and skill levels. Research opportunity: Sustainable Community Tool Development and Support - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
