Catalog Category Descriptions

The EECS online library contains a number of different types of items. The following describes the category headings.

All Documents Matches, as you would expect, all documents.

Books Occasionally will have books (in pdf or other format). More often contains only citation information in the description field, links, cover art, or other information.

Conference Presentations Refers to a paper presented at a technical conference. The description field will provide informatation on the conference (dates, times) as well as keywords for the paper. Download items may include the conference paper, or slides for the conference talk. Typical formats for download items are pdf, MS word, or text.

Departmental Documents of interest only within EECS. Access to these items may at some point be limited to machines connected to the EECS network, although this feature is not currently implemented.

Forms Forms are generally only for internal use. The download items contain the actual form. Typical format are MS word, text, or pdf.

Policies Copies of policies adopted by the School of EECS, the college, or the university.

Software Software created by students or faculty that may be of general interst. Download items may include manuals, or files. Typically the software is distributed in tar or zip format.

Technical Reports Technical reports written by faculty or students. The description should include the technical report number, date, keywords and abstract. May or may not permit the report itself to be downloaded. Subcatgories of Technical Report cover various specialized areas. (Submenus are currently not supported by browsers, so this feature is pending).

Thesis Masters or PhD thesis. The description will include the name and date of the work. May or may not permit the report itself to be downloaded. Subcategories of Thesis allow Undergraduate Honors, MS and PhD theses to be individually searched. (Submenus are currently not supported by browsers, so this feature is pending). The description should include the date of presentation, abstract, and major professor.

Reprint or Preprint This category includes preprints of articles that have been submitted for publication in journals or conferences, or reprints of such articles. The description will provide the original citation (conference or journal). Download items may or may not permit the article to be downloaded.

Other This category covers anything not included in the above.

File Names

Download file names should be short, and contain no spaces. They should be terminated by a three letter extension that indicates the file type, such as .doc for MS word files, .txt for text files, and so on.

How to Convert Documents to Different Types

The preferred format for distributing our thesis and technical reports is pdf, although other formats will be accepted. (I've had trouble getting the php programs to download some MS-word files, and some postscript files. So conversion to pdf seems to be recommended).

To convert a Word document to postscript, act like you are going to print the document, then select print to file. The result should be a PS document.

To convert a postscript document to pdf, use distill on the CS unix machines. Simply say ``distill foo.ps'', and the resulting file foo.pdf will get generated.
