UO and OSU Scientists Developing Smaller, Greener Gadgets

A new $20 million grant is enabling scientists at the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry on both campuses to do an advanced version of that for just pennies, using environmentally-friendly materials and smaller equipment. They're taking a green approach to chemistry by working on transferring information in the chip to commercial size products, using thin films and composite materials. The commercial size products can be used by companies like Intel to create cell phones and computers. KEZI

OSU posts record $4M in tech transfer income

Oregon State University’s efforts to expand its technology transfer operations paid off, with royalties from university-produced research growing 63 percent in the fiscal year to $4 million. OSU has an active portfolio of 101 licenses. Roughly a third of the royalty growth came from licensing a "transparent transistor" technology to businesses using it to develop new flat-screen TV displays. Portland Business Journal

OSU: A place for future engineers

According to OSU's most recent enrollment summary, roughly 3,600 undergraduate and 700 graduate students were enrolled in the College of Engineering in the spring of 2011, nearly 20 percent of the student population. Facebook Is Friend to Jobless and Small Business, Says Company COO

Sheryl Sandberg is widely considered the most powerful woman in Silicon Valley, and it's little wonder why. Sandberg is Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, which could soon have 1 billion users and be worth $100 billion. "Great [software] engineers in this economy...are in hugely high demand. And we all fight...for them," Sandberg said in an exclusive interview with "Nightline" anchor Bill Weir. "More students should study computer science. It's a great way to make sure you can be employed for the rest of your life." Nightline

Cornell Cup USA, presented by Intel, is a college-level embedded design competition created to empower student teams to become the inventors of the newest innovative applications of embedded technology. The inaugural competition will be held in May 2012 at Walt Disney World and will give teams the opportunity to win up to $10,000. Details
