No smoking on campus starting Sept. 1
On Sept. 1, smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on the Oregon State University Corvallis campus. The smoke-free policy is in effect year-round, including game days, so visitors to campus who are participating in tailgaiting activities will also be prohibited from smoking. Life@OSU

Public Wave Energy Test Facility Begins Operation in Oregon
The United States saw the launch of one of the first public wave energy testing systems this week off the Oregon coast near Newport, an operation which will allow private industry or academic researchers to test new wind energy technology. The testing facility, The Ocean Sentinel, cost $1.5 million and was developed by the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC) at Oregon State University. Wave Energy Devices Put To Test In Oregon
It’s not grid-connected – that type of test center, considered vital to commercializing wave energy, is still in the development stages – but the Pacific Northwest now has a place for companies and scientists to put new wave power devices through their paces. In addition to studying how wave energy devices fare in the waters, the program hopes to measure “potential environmental impacts, whether they might come from electromagnetic fields, changes in acoustics, or other factors.” EarthTechling

OSU looking for wave energy testing site
Oregon State University is looking for a place to build an industrial-scale, grid-connected wave energy test facility somewhere along the Oregon Coast where private companies can test buoy technology. They need standardized, reliable methods to test a buoy's durability, efficiency and impact on marine life, said Belinda Batten, director of OSU's Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center, the group that plans to build the test facility. Salesforce.com plans major Oregon outpost, promises 'hundreds' of jobs
San Francisco business software company Salesforce.com plans to open a major Oregon outpost within the next several months and hire "hundreds of people in the coming years." Salesforce makes customer relationship management (CRM) software to help businesses manage communication with clients and prospective clients. The company indicated it could have 500 Oregon employees by the end of next year. The Oregonian

Meridian aims to become next big software enterprise company
Thanks to a new mobile application created with software developed by Portland startup Meridian, travelers can check their flight status and get turn-by-turn directions to gates and other locations inside the airport, including restaurants and shops. The Oregonian

The University of Michigan Engineering Graduate Symposium takes place on Friday, November 2, 2012. This event showcases our graduate student research with more than 250 engineering posters. Prospective graduate engineering students will have the opportunity to attend to view the posters, interact with graduate students, participate in admissions/funding workshops, listen to featured speakers, visit one engineering department of particular interest, experience social life on campus and see Ann Arbor. To aid in this request some travel grants are available. Travel grants are for prospective Ph.D. students only. They cover the full cost of all expenses including airfare/mileage, hotels, meals and roundtrip airport transit from the Detroit Metro Airport. Details
