Medical vital-sign monitoring reduced to the size of a postage stamp
Electrical engineers at Oregon State University have developed new technology to monitor medical vital signs, with sophisticated sensors so small and cheap they could fit onto a bandage, be manufactured in high volumes and cost less than a quarter. “Current technology allows you to measure these body signals using bulky, power-consuming, costly instruments,” said Patrick Chiang, an associate professor in the OSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. For large turbines, residents would have to show that noise would be minimal, viewsheds would not be disturbed and the device would meet tough safety standards. Restrictions would be reduced for smaller devices. "The thing people are most concerned about is the visual impact," said Ted Brekken. `If your neighbor puts up a 70-foot wind turbine, that is as high as a seven story building." Students win coding event
Early this month, five students from Crescent Valley High School, Aaron Celeste, Fauzi Kliman, Damian Kulp, Gabriel Kulp, and Towaki Takikawa, traveled to Portland for CodeDay Portland. The team was challenged to create great mobile phone applications in 25 hours (noon to noon). The Raiders teamed up with four Oregon State University students, Cezary Wojcik, Chance Zibolski, Hamzah Khan and Isaac Archer, and together the team won the Best Mobile App award. The end result is a game that can run in any web browser or on any smart phone browser. Corvallis Gazette-Times


Job Outlook 2013: Plans for Salary Increases Dip, Signing Bonuses Climb
While the percentage of employers with plans to increase starting salaries to bachelor’s degree graduates from the Class of 2013 has dipped slightly this year, the percentage of employers expecting to offer signing bonuses has bumped up, according to NACE’s Job Outlook 2013 report. Increasing Diversity in Earth Sciences undergraduate research program
The Increasing Diversity in the Earth Sciences Program (IDES) is an Oregon-focused mentoring program providing students from diverse academic and personal backgrounds the opportunity to be involved in and explore the Earth Sciences, a field that is so broad it includes students from any major. Students with interests in engineering, law, social science, education, math and community can all find a home in the IDES program. IDES is a two-year program for Juniors and promising Sophomores, in which students are funded while attending summer training in basic Geographic Information Systems, Image Processing and developing projects of interest. Over the remainder of the summer and over the course of the 2-years, students work with mentors on their project/internship. All mentored projects and internships will include a stipend. Details


Knowles Science Teaching Foundation Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellows
KSTF’s programs are designed to help reverse the current national trend that sees approximately half of all secondary teachers leave the field within five years. The total award for each Fellow is valued at nearly $175,000 over the course of the five-year Fellowship. Fellows receive tuition assistance while participating in a teacher credential program, monthly stipends, and grants for professional development and teaching materials.
