Simple curiosity drove Tom Dietterich’s broad research interests that span several areas of science, engineering, and biomedicine. Widely recognized for his role in creating and nurturing the area of machine learning — a field revolutionizing science, industry and government — his influence was acknowledged this year by Oregon State University when he was selected to be a “Distinguished Professor,” the highest honor for faculty. Inspiring Interest in Artificial Intelligence
The rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence (AI) has broad applications in computer games, robotics, air traffic control, ecological modeling and many other areas. To inspire more interest for AI, Oregon State University and the National Science Foundation have teamed up for two years to hold an all-expense-paid workshop for undergraduate students from around the country. Intel Ultimate Engineering Experience
July 15-August 22
Intel and PCC Rock Creek are pleased to announce this free summer camp offered to all (incoming) freshman and sophomore students enrolled in an electrical-computer-microelectronics- or-technology related engineering program at any college of university in OR or USA. The IUEE Program is designed to provide you with hands-on technical engineering experience. We will be building a robot, developing an app, and acting like entrepreneurs to create and develop solutions to improve people’s lives. There will be competitions with cool prizes to the winning teams. Details

VOLUNTEER AT THE 2013 ENGINEERING EXPO!
This year the Engineering Expo is happening on Friday, May 17. The College of Engineering needs volunteers to help on May 16th and 17th with setting up, event activities, and tearing down. Oregon State Startup Weekend
Friday-Sunday, May 10 – 12, Club Level Reser Stadium
Oregon State University Athletics is hosting this event for students, athletes, faculty, alumni and the community at large. Startup Weekend, a nonprofit based in Seattle, Wash., is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. Each event is a 54-hour blast of problem solving. Participants pitch ideas for possible ventures and break into teams on Friday. Teams consist of whoever has the necessary skills to bring the idea to life. Everyone with any background participates. Details

Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing (GHC)
Scholarship applications are now being accepted for entry to the Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing (October 2-5, Minneapolis). The GHC scholarship program seeks to broaden the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in computing by enabling a wide variety of students who otherwise may not have the means, to attend and participate in the Grace Hopper Celebration. The deadline to apply is May 15th. Details

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATES

Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Systems (TANMS) Research in Engineering for Undergraduates (REU)
This center is working on a fundamentally new approach to electromagnetic power at the nanoscale that replaces traditional wire-based electronics with a revolutionary technique that couples electricity and magnetism by using multiferroic materials which can be magnetically switch ”on” and “off” by an electric field.Research projects are available in TANMS focusing on memory, antennae and motors. Research opportunities are available at UCLA, Berkeley, Cornell, and Cal State Northridge. Application deadline: May 15. Details

Software Engineers & Programmers Needed for Start-Up Weekend. The app I'm proposing is a "tutor app", which targets middle school, high school, and undergraduate students. I've been tutoring students for approximately 5 years, and with this app I hope to reduce the FWD (Failure, withdrawal, or "D" grade) rate in topics related to science or mathematics. In terms of smart-phone carrier, anything is fair game; the goal is to eventually reach all carriers, but any carrier will suffice as a basis. Details

Extreme Blue™ software development (internship) program, IBM. Once selected into the program, you will become part of a team working in one of our two US labs, in Austin TX or Durham NC. Your team's challenge is to develop the technology and business plan for a new product or service that addresses an existing market challenge. The PureStack Extreme Blue project will be leveraging the cutting edge Openstack open source project, an industry wide leader in cloud technology, IAAS, in order to help provide IBM technology with the ability to further enhance its cloud portfolio. The DB2 engine is made up of many complex components such as logging, indexing, memory management, data management, catalog services, runtime interpreter, query compiler, optimizer and utilities. As a software developer, the candidate will be working on DB2 for Linux, Unix and Windows in the West Coast Development team. You will design, code and test future enhancements to this product. Custom Analog IC and CMOS Image Sensor Characterization Engineer, Voxtel. Voxtel is seeking an engineer to characterize ROICs and imagers and assist in transfer of the technologies to production. Responsibilities will include bench test and characterization of analog/mixed signal integrated circuits, imagers, and focal plane readout integrated circuits (ROICs).
