Race with the sun
Last year, the OSU team won the race, and it also got the sportsmanship award for helping other schools make it through that first crucial lap. This year, the team will defend its title, and speed is not as important as distance. The goal is to outlast the competition. OSU's car completed 193 laps in the 2013 race. The winner must complete at least one lap after the last competitor's car stops and runs out of fuel — or electrons, in this case. Ashland Daily Tidings

Wave Energy Engineering for Middle Schools
If you want to get young people interested in engineering, it’s never too early to plant that seed. Not every kid has an engineer in the family, so it’s important that schools provide hands-on experience.  That’s why I’m excited about the Wave Energy Engineering project created by Oregon State University. Bill Hanshumaker, Chief Scientist at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitor Center, and Alan Perrill, a volunteer at the center, designed a wave energy device that’s made from off-the-shelf parts and can be constructed by a middle school student. engineering.com

Portland company unveils new tool as open source community converges on Rose City
Next week, thousands of Open Source experts and users will be Portland for the O’Reilly Open Source Convention. Local startup GraphAlchemist is hoping to tap into some of that excitement. The data visualization company has tools for corporate customers to visualize data sets and map connections, and now it is releasing a version called Alchemy.js that will allow people to get a taste of the product.
