OPPORTUNITIES

The Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRA-W) is now accepting applications for the 2007 Grad Cohort Program for Women. The application deadline is January 20, 2007. Cohort activities will kick-off with a workshop to be held March 2-3, 2007 in San Francisco, CA. This workshop, funded by generous donations from Microsoft and Google, is the cornerstone of CRA-W’s Grad Cohort Program. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase the ranks of senior women in computing by building and mentoring nationwide communities of women through their graduate studies. All of the students will meet for two days with 10-15 senior computing researchers and professionals who will share pertinent information on graduate school survival skills as well as more personal information and insights about their experiences. The rewards of a research career will be emphasized. Details.

January 23, 3:00 – 6:30 PM, MU Ballroom. OSU Non-Profit Career Day. Come learn about nonprofit and socially responsible career options from an international nonprofit/NGO network representative, seasoned professionals and representatives from local and national nonprofit organizations. Details.

SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

Vanguard has established a scholarship program to assist female students entering their senior year of college who are majoring in computer science, computer engineering, web design, or related technical engineering disciplines. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at a select accredited four-year institution of the student’s choice. Details.

WISE 2007: Women's Institute in Summer Enrichment. Sponsored by the Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST), June 10-15, 2007: Berkeley, California. WISE is a 1-week residential summer program on the University of California, Berkeley campus that brings together graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and professors from all disciplines that are interested in Ubiquitous Secure Technology and the social, political, and economical ramifications that are associated with this technology. Central Lincoln People’s Utility has an opening for a Systems Engineer. Performs highly technical engineering studies, and design system improvements which are highly complex in nature. Performs technical studies such as load flow, voltage regu­lation, fault current, power factor, etc. Design, prepare specifications, estimate costs, prepare and evaluate bids, and supervise construction of major system improvements. Assists in preparation of specifications for the various Engineering Manuals. Interpret specifications, and inspect work done by con­tractors. Details.

OSU Cereal Genetics Laboratory. The candidate will be inheriting an ongoing software project for the Cereal Genetics Laboratory at OSU. They will be taking over development of a database application for the viewing, editing, and interpretation of stored plant information, as well as maintaining, updating, and installing a final production MySQL server that will be used to store all necessary plant information currently being held in Excel spreadsheets. The student will be fairly autonomous with weekly update meetings with necessary stakeholders in the Lab and development work being done on their own schedule. Details.

GX: Web Type Developer – HTML / XML / JavaScript Contract Programmer. Experienced, mid-level Web Developer wanted for excellent contract to perm opportunity. This gig is a finite job that has been priority requested from our client. The GXWorkspace team feels that a programmer available over the Christmas Break who is willing to perform quickly and concisely would be a good fit for our process. This job is also an excellent conduit to evaluate new resources for longer term part time/full time positions thorough 2007 and beyond. Details.

Undergraduate Science and Engineering Internships in Germany. RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) offers a unique internship model, giving North American students in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors. This year, the RISE database contains a record total of 505 internship openings at the top research institutions (e.g. Max-Planck and Fraunhofer Institutes) and universities in Germany. Details.

Short-term need on a programming project. It involves development of Forms in C# / .NET for an interactive PC-based application. Looking for student intern who might be available for an internship assignment with HP. The immediate work would be of 3-6 month duration with a possibility of further extension. Work-study opening for website maintenance and creation. Primary duties include: maintaining/creating websites; Secondary duties: interaction with the public and university community in person and via phone/mail; routine office tasks, such as, preparing draft documents, copying, mail distribution, etc. Details.
