World-Wide Water Resources: Supply and Demand in the World's Future - by the Civil, Environmental, and Construction Management Department Head, and Chemical Engineering interim Department Head Kenneth J. Williamson

Ever wonder what will happen when all the water in the world is used up? Will the great cities of the world dry up and become urban deserts? Can we meet the growing demand for food with ever shrinking water resources? What about recreation in the face of water scarcity? All of these questions will be answered and so much more by Dr. Williamson at our next meeting. Hope to see you there!

The UN: Introduction and Opportunities for Involvement - by Professor Mary Pettenger, Western Oregon University, Political Science Department

We all know about the UN. We know that its headquarters is in New York and it does peace keeping missions around the world. We even know that the UN also has a hand in international relief and economic development work but just what is the UN, really? In which sectors does the UN operate? What, exactly, do all of the many parts of the UN do? And, more importantly, how can I get involved with the UN? Come to the next EWB meeting to hear a presentation by Professor Pettenger which will cover these topics and provide a primmer on the UN. See you there!

IN THE NEWS

We've all seen automobile GPS displays. But can you imagine having one literally right before your eyes... in the windshield? Thanks to a breakthrough in the rapidly evolving field of transparent electronics, we might just realize possibilities like this someday soon. Researchers out of Oregon State University have developed the world's first completely transparent integrated circuit, and the many uses are plain to see. Or maybe they're not. NSF Podcast

A $100 laptop? Not so absurd. For Michael Burns and Justin Gallardo, both juniors at Oregon State University and 2004 McNary grads, a United Nations summit in 2006 grabbed Burns' attention. The two young men work at the Open Source Laboratory at OSU, which focuses on what could be called communal software development. Keizertimes

The wave energy developers are coming. The rush is on to tap the waves that regularly coast toward Oregon for electricity. The newest addition is Finavera Renewables Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, which has received permission to develop a 100-megawatt wave energy park in Coos County. Finavera is teaming with Oregon State University scientists and engineers to perfect the ocean wave buoy technology. MSN Money
