Rep. Darlene Hooley is moving legislation through Congress that would authorize $250 million in federal grants to research and develop wave energy over five years. Hooley's proposal, which the House Science Committee included in an energy bill moving through the House, would represent the United States' first major investment in wave energy. Oregon has positioned itself as a potential national leader in the field. Some of the most substantive wave energy research in the United States is being conducted at Oregon State University. SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

The IEEE Computer Society is the largest of 36 technical societies of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It offers the Lance Stafford Larson Student Scholarship to encourage students to develop excellence in their communication skills and motivate them toward achievement in the field of computer science. This award is presented for the best student paper. Only papers concerning computer-related subjects are eligible. Details.
The Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) encourages academic excellence for students in the computing discipline. The UPE initiated this award with the IEEE Computer Society, as the largest association of computer professionals, to raise the importance of academic achievement in our future computer professionals. Details.
Distinguished Postdoctoral Appointments, Los Alamos National Laboratory. Candidates must display extraordinary ability in scientific research and show clear and definite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in the research they pursue. Up to two appointments are awarded from each category annually. Appointments are for three years. Details.
- J Robert Oppenheimer(JRO) Postdoctoral Fellow
Named after the Laboratory's first Director, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers on staff initiated research. Open to all nationalities.
- Richard P Feynman (RPF) Postdoctoral Fellow in Theory and Computing
Named after the famed theoretical physicist and winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineerings on staff initiated research in the areas of theory and computing. Restricted to US citizens.
- Frederick Reines (FR) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Experimental Sciences
Named after the former LANL researcher who won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers regarding staff initiated research in experimental sciences. This fellowship will be awarded to outstanding experimentalists, regardless of their field of study. Restricted to US citizens.
