OPPORTUNITIES

The Linux User Group is sponsoring a guest lecture on computer investigation and forensics. This is a chance to hear how real detectives investigate cybercrime and what tools they use to gather evidence on PCs. All staff and students are welcome to join.

The Linux User Group is putting on "Installfest 8", a community-wide event to encourage people to try Linux. If you've ever been curious about (or have tried and ran into difficulties in) using Linux, this is the event for you. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and assist in installing Linux on your computer.

Requirements: Bring a computer/laptop to install Linux on (monitors, keyboards and mice are provided)

University Marketing at OSU is hosting two discussion groups for students regarding collegiate apparel and non-apparel products on November 6th from 11:00am – 1:00pm. This is a great opportunity to provide your thoughts on future OSU merchandise. Lunch will be provided as well as a gift for your time and participation. Engineering faculties still shy in women. Although women have made huge gains on college and university campuses in the last generation, science and engineering faculties continue to be predominantly male. According to the National Science Foundation, women hold 28 percent of science and engineering faculty positions and 18 percent of full professor posts. The Oregonian

SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships are awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest. NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science or engineering. Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor's degrees by Fall 2008. Fellows selected in Spring 2008 must begin their fellowship tenure in Fall 2008. Details

The Department of Energy Special Emphasis Program provides opportunities to participate in ongoing research and related activities in the Department of Energy's Office of Science. The program duration is for ten weeks with some part-time appointments. Eligible participants are graduate students who are U.S. citizens. Eligible disciplines include engineering, science, mathematics, project management, computer science, statistics, finance, economics, law, policy, and related disciplines. Details

The Charles Babbage Institute is an historical archives and research center of the University of Minnesota. CBI is dedicated to promoting study of the history of information technology and information processing and their impact on society. The Charles Babbage Institute is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 Adelle and Erwin Tomash Graduate Fellowship. The fellowship will be awarded to a graduate student for doctoral dissertation research in the history of computing. Details

AT&T Labs Fellowship Program consists of a single type of award in the program: a 3-year fellowship. It is awarded contingent on an annual review demonstrating that the recipients are making satisfactory progress toward their PhD. AT&T Labs Fellowships are available to outstanding underrepresented minority and women students pursuing PhD studies in computer- and communications-related fields. Details
