ANNOUNCEMENTS

Students: Please note that the College of Engineering has moved the scholarship application deadline to February 1 (previously April 10). Online applications will be available on December 1 and remain open through February 1. They have selected this new date for two reasons: (1) to coincide with the University deadline, and (2) to inform students of scholarship awards in a more timely manner. Please watch your email for a link to the online scholarship application starting December 1.

OPPORTUNITIES

The Linux User Group is putting on "Installfest 8," a community-wide event to encourage people to try Linux. If you've ever been curious about (or have tried and ran into difficulties in) using Linux, this is the event for you. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and assist in installing Linux on your computer. Details

Professor Tom Dietterich was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dietterich was recognized "for distinguished contributions to the field of machine learning." Science Magazine

Design Engineer, Entry Level - Electrical. Cypress is looking for someone that can help characterize and debug test chips with various analog functions, mostly A/D related at the moment. So it could be a BS or MS, or co-ops too. A PhD RA position is being offered in the area of wireless sensor networks for volcano monitoring, starting Jan. 15, 2008. In collaboration with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL), USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory(CVO) and Harvard University, we are developing platforms that involve real-time data collection of seismic, acoustic, and GPS data from a network of wireless sensors deployed on an active volcano. This project requires a tight integration of computer science and domain science expertise, including novel techniques for data collection, medium access control, multihop networking, real-time data compression, and machine learning. Mega Tech of Oregon (MTO), located in Corvallis, is looking for someone that has experience in circuit design and layout to assist in the redesign of an existing family of printed circuit assemblies. These products are being supplied to an existing multinational customer and is intended to merge the functionality of three different printed circuit assemblies into one assembly. The services provided will be on an independent contractor basis working for MTO. Details
