IN THE NEWS

The heaps of information piling up virtually on today's computers present a major organizational problem for many people. A soon-to-be-released product called Smart Desktop, from a division of Seattle-based company Pi Corporation, aims to help people sort that information automatically and intelligently. MIT Technology Review

Software company MyStrands Inc. has raised $24 million, mostly from Spanish bank Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A., bringing total investment to $55 million. MyStrands was started up four years ago by Francisco Martin, a graduate student at Oregon State University, and two OSU professors, Thomas Dietterich and Jon Herlocker. Portland Business Journal

The Memorial Union Program Council is pleased to announce the 19th annual Women's Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 in the Memorial Union. A daylong event designed to inspire and motivate women students, this conference will consist of a keynote speaker, two breakout sessions with multiple presenters, and a luncheon. All sessions will reflect the theme "Changes, Challenges, Choices." If you are interested in this event, the School of EECS will gladly nominate you for participation in the conference. Please stop by the front desk in Kelley 1148 no later than December 14 to be included in the School's nomination.
