MyStrands reinvents itself. Once again, the Corvallis-based tech company MyStrands has broadened its mission and shortened its name. Now the company has morphed yet again, moving into the realm of personal finance and abbreviating its name to just plain Strands. The firm’s latest offering, still in the beta testing phase, is called moneyStrands and was enabled by the purchase of a small startup called Expensr. Corvallis Gazette-Times

Students to Test 'Tsunami Shelters'. This “Tsunami Shelter Challenge” is part of a two-year effort to increase student science and technology skills, using issues that seem relevant – in this case, building a vertical-escape tsunami shelter that could help save lives if such an event hit the Pacific Northwest. “These students have worked the past year learning about tsunami science, the engineering of structures, and how computational modeling is used to design and test structures,” said Rozeanne Steckler, creator of the project and director of the Northwest Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering at OSU. Students test model shelters. Sixth-graders gasped as a two-foot wave of water rolled toward them — and weeks’ worth of their work. Corvallis Gazette-Times

Students pit block shelters against ocean wave power. Screams erupted from the mouths of elementary school students as a powerful tsunami bore down upon their carefully constructed shelters on Thursday, some of which were obliterated by the wave. Eugene Register-Guard

Waving goodbye? Models undergo tsunami test. Sixth-graders gasped as a two-foot wave of water rolled toward them — and weeks’ worth of their work. The water crashed over models made of small wooden blocks and glued together with toothpaste. Many of the tiny buildings remained intact, despite the equivalent of a 30-foot wave hitting them. Albany Democrat-Herald

Oregon is looking into setting up the first commercial wave farm in the United States. With wave heights averaging 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in summer and 3.5 metres (11.4 ft) in winter, the 460-kilometre (285-mile) coastline of the northwestern state is said to boast a wave energy potential of 13,800 MW, more than double its electricity energy consumption.
