Feeling the Heat in a Solar Race Car. Driving 2,400 miles across the scorching Midwest in July without air conditioning is not pleasant, but it's the only way to win a solar car race. Eighteen collegiate teams will brave temperatures in the 90s and roads littered with road kill during the North American Solar Challenge, a 10-day road race from Texas to Alberta in cars powered only by the sun. "It's about 95 degrees and humid," says Kathy Van Wormer, co-captain of the Oregon State University Solar Vehicle Team. "In the car it's about 110. But what's got us worried is the wind. The car is shaped like an airplane wing." Wired Magazine
Cars race on solar power. It seems high gas prices aren't going away, but a group of college students are using one natural resource we have plenty of to power their cars: the sun. KXII TV (Texas)
Solar cars to stop in Neosho. While gasoline prices hover around $4 a gallon, that won’t matter to a group of drivers stopping in Neosho Monday on one leg of a 2,400-mile journey. That’s because these vehicles operate entirely on the sun. Neosho Daily News (Missouri)
Transparent Semiconductors May Be Future of Flat Panel Display Industry. Some types of “amorphous oxide” transparent semiconductors originally developed in the College of Engineering at Oregon State University may form the basis for the next generation of flat panel displays, providing better performance at a lower cost. What does it take to become a Professional Engineer? Join us and learn how!
The NSPE Mentoring Task Force would like to invite all young engineers to attend a special presentation on professional licensure. This valuable session will be held as part of the NSPE 2008 Annual Conference on Saturday, July 26, 2008 1:00 - 3:00 PM at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower in Portland, OR.
The session will include tips on setting a career path with professional licensure as a goal, a review of the application process, a question and answer segment with state licensure board representatives and an opportunity to sit face-to-face with an experienced P.E. who can assist with your experience profile and guide you through the ins and outs of this important developmental step.
The NSPE Mentoring Task Force is pleased to offer this opportunity to NSPE members, non-members, engineering students and students thinking of choosing engineering as a career path. No registration is necessary and there is no fee for this event. However, an RSVP to the NSPE Mentoring Task Force will help us prepare for your attendance.
