Oregon State wins federal grant to boost wave energy development. Oregon's effort to become a leader in wave energy development got a boost from the U.S. Department of Energy with the announcement of a five-year, $6.25-million grant to establish an ocean energy research center in Newport. Oregon State University, already known for its wave energy studies, snagged the grant. It will add the money to other funding sources to create a $13.5 million pool of cash for what has been dubbed the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center. The Oregonian, OSU Press Release, Newport News-Times

The accidental artist. Rusty Pattieshaw’s latest job for Prater Industrial, a construction contractor, was a bit out of the ordinary: The 58-year-old Corvallis resident had to create and assemble a huge stainless steel sculpture that looks like a giant loop, for display at the Kelley Engineering Center. The English Language Institute at OSU Needs YOU!

Help an international student from the English Language Institute practice speaking English

The English Language Institute is looking for English speakers to become conversant volunteers. As a conversant you help an international student practice speaking English and adjust to life in the U.S. It’s a great way to learn about other cultures and make new friends! We need OSU students, staff and faculty to be a part of this program.

Volunteer one hour, once a week, for the 2008 fall term. The day, time, and meeting place are decided by you and and your ELI student. Make a new friend, learn about a new culture, gain multicultural experience, add a great item to your resume and graduate or professional school applications, and HAVE FUN!!

We are expecting more than 120 new ELI students to arrive for fall term. We would love to be able to offer each student a conversant. Please consider becoming a conversant volunteer today!

If you are interested, please contact us at 737-1838, or via email at ELIconversantpgm@oregonstate.edu. Applications are also available at the ELI, Snell Hall, Room 304A. Please stop by!
