Newport Wave Energy Test Called A Success. Columbia Power Technologies partnered with Oregon State University for this sea trial. They pronounce the performance of their four ton bright yellow buoy a “major success.” Research engineer Joe Prudell says the experimental model generated more than enough juice to light a typical home. Fishermen seek more input on wave energy. To the hundreds of commercial crab fishermen in Oregon — and those from Washington and California who also fish Oregon waters — protecting valuable crab grounds is at the top of the list when it comes to considering where to place possibly hundreds of wave energy devices. BA 199 is a year long 6 credit course (2 credits per quarter) which covers the fundamentals of launching a venture and provides students the opportunity to road test their venture in a structured environment under the supervision of a seasoned entrepreneur. This is a new course than offers an unparalleled opportunity for all OSU students.

Meeting time: Monday 4 p.m. – 5:50 p.m.
Weatherford EG 01
CRN 18803; Sec 002

The attached course announcement and the FAQs below provide additional information.

Enrollment is limited and instructor approval is required. Students are encouraged to contact Dr. Christopher Klemm via email at aep.info@bus.oregonstate.edu to discuss their participation in the course.

BA 199 FAQs

Is BA 199 only for business students? No, the course is open and suitable for all students, though it is better suited for juniors and seniors. One of the skills that the course will be teaching is how to work effectively within cross disciplinary teams, the type of teams that students will be joining in the workforce.

Can a student take the course for just one quarter? No. The expectation is that this is a commitment for the full year.

Is there funding available to help the teams move their projects ahead? Yes, teams can apply for up to $1,500. for investment in their ventures. Students taking a loan from the course (from AEP that is) will sign a statement agreeing to repay the loan made within the course framework in full before the end of the course and accept the proviso that no spring quarter grades will be submitted until a team’s loan is repaid in full.

Can the students keep the venture beyond the course? Yes, subject to conditions which will be presented and discussed within the course.

Who owns intellectual property developed during the course? As I understand the OSU technology transfer policy, undergraduates who develop intellectual property own it, unlike graduate students and university employees
