--------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Tide of interest in wave energy rises. Tapping the ocean is not a new notion. The tide of interest in ocean waves as a source of energy has flowed and ebbed for the past several decades, and is again rising as government and corporate leaders consider ways to offset the effects of global climate change, rising energy costs, and the nation's insatiable dependence on oil. Newport News Times Drafting current on ocean waves. The world has been searching for a hero for the clean energy crisis, and now the savior may have been found in the ocean's waves. The engineers of Columbia Power Technologies, located at Oregon State, believe wave energy could be the answer to the world's looming clean energy problem. They have created a mechanism that harnesses the energy in waves, using what they call "direct drive technology": the simplification of a mechanism used to accomplish their task. The Daily Barometer --------------------------------------------------- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of the P3 Award Program, is seeking applications proposing to research, develop, and design solutions to real world challenges involving the overall sustainability of human society. The P3 competition highlights the use of scientific principles in creating innovative projects focused on sustainability. The P3 Awards program was developed to foster progress toward sustainability by achieving the mutual goals of economic prosperity, protection of the planet, and improved quality of life for its people - people, prosperity, and the planet - the three pillars of sustainability. The EPA offers the P3 competition in order to respond to the technical needs of the world while moving towards the goal of sustainability. Please see the P3 website (http://www.epa.gov/P3) for more details about this program. Oregon University System Sustainability Conference. October 23-24, University of Oregon. Explore the cutting edge in sustainable campus operations and student engagement. Experts in energy conservation, carbon markets, organizational change, co-curricular activities, purchasing, recycling, and more will lead thought-provoking sessions designed to inspire us to ratchet up our efforts to transform our campuses. Details There's a new student organization starting up on campus this fall: The OSU Micro Air Vehicle club. The club's primary focus this year will be designing, building, and testing an MAV to take to an international competition happening next June in Pensacola, Florida. For more information about that event, visit http://robotics.ece.uwf.edu/imav09/index.html. Other plans for the club this year include model airplane flight training, an introduction to carbon fiber process, and work with wind tunnel equipment. We'll also need to build the MAV club Web site, find additional competition sponsors, organize fund raising activities, design club t-shirts, and organize flight testing and training activities.
Unsure about which major to pursue in engineering? Want a better understanding of your chosen field? Curious about the degree options out there? Then attend any of these sessions during Engineering Awareness Week.
