OSU alums make space dreams come true
It's a small world; and if you don't believe it, just ask two Oregon State University graduates who have seen this world from space. It's a credit to OSU that two engineering alumni have not only been chosen as astronauts, but have made it into space. Their stories should inspire students to dream big and to do the hard work that turns dreams into reality. Salem Statesman Journal

Football: Computers Learning to Watch, Evaluate, Maybe Even Coach
Bill Belichick’s job as head coach of the New England Patriots is probably safe for now, but check back in 15 or 20 years – some of the newest research on machine learning, artificial intelligence and computer vision is using football as a guinea pig, and who knows what new pass formation it might come up with? At Oregon State University, experts in artificial intelligence are using a Digital Scout Project to develop computer programs that can “understand” video of football plays. They hope to push the limits of what computers can see, what action they can follow, what they can figure out and maybe even improve upon. Media Newswire

Concerns emerge about environmental effects of wave-energy technology
Energy generated from the ocean's waves and tides might be the next source of "green" power in our region, but the technology demands more study. Seattle Times

Engaging Students Through Inquiry-Based Cooperative Learning
All teaching faculty, staff, and graduate assistants welcome!
Tuesday, Dec. 2, 12-1 pm
Milam 215
Do you subscribe to the banking method of teaching? Are you depositing information in to your students' brains and wondering what it is they retained? This presentation by Dr. Janine Trempy, Microbiology, will focus on ways that change the learning environment from a transmittal of information pedagogy to a student centered pedagogy. This workshop will provide examples as well as a step by step description for implementing this pedagogy. Over 120 studies, at the college level, support the effectiveness of cooperative learning at promoting: 1) greater intrinsic motivation to learn, 2) greater long term retention of skills and concepts, and 3) increased retention of students until graduation. Light lunch will be provided.
