A bright future
Terri Fiez likes to fly below the radar. But the former Oregon State University professor is going to become a lot more visible as she tries to raise $7 million over the next year for her startup, Azuray Technologies. The Tualatin company’s focus on one of today’s hottest growth industries — alternative energy — already won Azuray an $8 million investment in May from New Enterprise Associates, one of the largest and oldest venture capital firms in the country. This session will be of particular interest to instructors new to teaching. Dr. Saunders will discuss and answer questions on some of the most critical aspects of teaching in higher learning. Resources to support teaching at OSU will be reviewed. The CTL handbook will be provided to attendees. Register at http://oregonstate.edu/ctl/registration_form.html.
Discover Your Teaching Philosophy
Wednesday, Jan. 21, 10:00 am-12:30 pm, Milam 215
This workshop will be of particular interest to faculty and graduate teaching assistants preparing a teaching portfolio and who wish to create a statement of their teaching philosophy. All faculty and GTAs who teach hold assumptions about what it means to teach. Ask a dozen instructors and you will hear a range of answers that describe guiding, facilitating, telling, showing, planning, helping, directing, and so forth. The answers one gives tell you something about each person’s “perspective” or philosophy of teaching. Register at http://oregonstate.edu/ctl/registration_form.html.

Teach For America seeks to enlist our nation’s future leaders in the fight against educational inequality. We ask college graduates of all academic majors to teach for two years in a low-income community. If you think you have what it takes to tackle the civil rights issue of our generation, then we encourage you to apply. Our next application deadline is January 7, 2009. The application is simple and straightforward – two 500-word essays and a resume. Get started at https://www.teachforamerica.org/online/info/index.jsp. Students who will be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs for the 2009-10 school year are eligible to apply for the multiyear scholarships. The scholarship program's selection criteria include academic excellence, leadership skills, community involvement, and financial need. Particular attention is paid to students who have lost the financial and social support of their families and/or communities as a result of revealing their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. On average, a Point Scholarship devotes between $26,000 and $31,000 annually to each scholar. In return, Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and to give back to the LGBT community through the completion of an individual community service project each year. In addition, scholars are matched with mentors from the professional world who lend their expertise and career guidance and serve as role models.
