Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Workshop to be held at the 2009 NWFPA Food Manufacturing & Packaging Expo at Oregon Convention Center, Portland, OR from January 19th to 20th, 2009. Details (MS Word document)
The workshop will host 10 national speakers to present the latest information about RFID technology and its recent applications in food safety and traceability, packaging, and manufacturing. This is the first national RFID workshop that provides close interaction between the RFID industry and food processing and packaging industries. It is co-organized and sponsored by Oregon State University Food Innovation Center, Northwest Food Processors’ Association, and Oregon Department of Agriculture.
The Team for Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST) is proud to announce the third annual Women's Institute in Summer Enrichment (WISE 2009) held at the University of California, Berkeley. Details (PDF)
Tuition for WISE 2009 is $2,500; however, NSF-TRUST fellowships are available to US professors, post-doctoral fellows, and Ph.D. Candidates studying at US universities. There is a maximum of 20 fellowships for Ph.D. candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and professors of all levels for the Institute.
This summer, the seminar will be held the week of June 16 at the University of California, Berkeley campus and we expect to have 30 participants. The program is a one-week seminar with a multiple speaker/panel format.
Summer 2009, the program topic may include but are not limited to:
-- Large-Scale Sensing Systems
-- Secure Sensor Networking
-- Sensor Information Processing
-- Engineering, Maintenance, and Security of Critical Infrastructure
-- Public Surveillance, Privacy, and the 4th Amendment

The COMAP Mathematical Contest in Modeling will be held February 5-9, 2009. This is an international, team based, undergraduate, mathematical modeling competition. Each team has three students, from any major. Two open-ended, real-world problems will be offered. Teams will choose one problem and write up a thorough solution approach within 4 days. Teams may use any inanimate source of data or materials. Submissions will be judged on the basis of scientific merits as well as clarity and organization of the written report. SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

Oregon State University Retirement Association has a scholarship opportunity for OSU undergraduate students. One thousand dollar scholarships are available for two students majoring in a subject that leads to a career promoting healthy aging. This could be anyone from Business to Health and Human Science and Pharmacy to Engineering. The student needs to show a connection as to how their chosen career will benefit healthy aging. Microsoft is excited to be offering scholarships for the 2009–2010 academic year. Applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2009 and we will target announcing recipients by March 20, 2009.
Students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at a college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time the application is submitted. Students must be enrolled full-time and making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, such as math or physics, with a demonstrated interest in computer science. The student must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0. Details
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) is an Agency-wide fellowship program for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development. This twelve month award will strongly encourage students to participate in a 10 week NASA Center-based research experience at the Center extending the GSRP Fellowship. The program will support approximately 180 graduate students annually. Current research opportunities are available at http://fellowships.hq.nasa.gov/gsrp/research/.
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. SWE Scholarships are only open to women pursuing baccalaureate or graduate degrees in engineering or computer science, as well as engineering and computer science students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering programs. START Leader
OSU START is the summer advising and registration program. It is the first part in the three-step commitment to orienting new students to the OSU community. One and two-day programs are offered in June, July, and August. START leaders: Represent OSU to new OSU students and their families; Facilitate small groups and speak in front of large groups; Assist new students with course registration; Implement evening social programs; Lead campus tours; Must register for and pass a training course Spring term 2009.
U-Engage Peer Instructor
U-Engage is a two-credit class available to any new OSU student. The course consists of an instructor-taught lecture and a recitation led by a peer leader. Topics addressed in U-Engage include: academic success; positive relationships with faculty; career and academic direction; and diversity. U-Engage Peer Leaders: Work with faculty and other peer leaders and attend each U-Engage lecture; Lead a group of 20 students in a recitation once a week during Fall Term 2009; Must register for and pass a training course Spring term 2009.
