OPPORTUNITIES

The New Enterprise Challenge is a business plan competition created and sponsored by Oregon State University’s Austin Entrepreneurship Program to highlight OSU innovators and further our mission of fostering entrepreneurship across the OSU community. The Challenge is an opportunity for OSU students to present their business ideas to business experts including successful entrepreneurs, senior executives, venture advisors, and venture investors. The best business plans will receive cash awards including: First Prize - $10,000; Second Prize - $5,000; Third Prize - $2,500. Details

The Global Venture Challenge (GVC) is a unique educational event challenging students from around the globe to promote and encourage entrepreneurship and innovation in technology-based businesses. It is hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee (UT) to foster and renew the entrepreneurial spirit among students, educators, industry, science leaders, government and the investment community. The Global Venture Challenge 2009 graduate student competition will be held March 25-27, 2009, at ORNL, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Details

Smart-ups' next Pub-Talk event is a Business Plan Competition that is taking place in Corvallis on February 26th from 5-7:30 pm. If you'd like to the opportunity to pitch your business plan at this event please submit your executive summary before 5 pm, February 6th. Click here for submission guidelines. Note: There is no fee to submit to present at this event.

You will have 10 minutes to deliver you pitch (via PPT slides) and the audience will cast their vote for the best overall presentation. The winner will have their $149 submission fee waived for an opportunity to present at the Willamette Angel Conference on May 14th in Corvallis. The winner of the WAC will receive up to $150,000 from local angel investors! This is the first event of its kind for the Corvallis and Eugene areas.

We will also select three additional businesses to deliver Angel Ignite pitches. An Angel Ignite pitch consists of delivering your pitch using 13 slides/15 seconds per slide = 3 minutes 25 seconds. It's a very exhilarating event and a great opportunity to hone your pitch.

Below are important deadlines leading up to this event:

  • Feb 6, 5 pm: Deadline to submit executive summary (see guidelines)
  • Feb 13: Presenters will be selected to deliver their pitches
  • Week of Feb 16: 1 hour coaching sessions with presenters
  • Feb 23: Final copy of PowerPoint slides due
  • Feb 26: Pub-Talk in Corvallis

SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

The Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) Program provides hands-on paid research experiences for qualified undergraduate and graduate students (rising juniors and above) on-site at NASA Langley Research Center. We offer three sessions, summer, fall, and spring. The summer session is a 10-week internship and the spring and fall are 15-week internships. Deadline to apply for a summer scholarship is February 1. Details

The Tau Beta Pi Fellowship Program is the organization's single most important project for the advancement of engineering education and the profession. Since the beginning, the purpose has been to finance, for a select group of members chosen for merit and need, a year of graduate study at the colleges of their choice. Tau Beta Pi fellows are free to do graduate work in any field which will enable them to contribute to the engineering profession. Details

The Tau Beta Pi Association Scholarship Program was established in 1998 to advance engineering education and the profession. The Tau Beta Pi Scholarship Program The administration of these scholarships has been kept as free of restriction as possible, in order to accommodate students. However, because Tau Beta Pi is the engineering honor society, recipients are expected ultimately to advance the interest of the engineering profession. Only members of Tau Beta Pi are eligible to apply. Details

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's (GSFC) Earth Sciences Division, in collaboration with the Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology (GEST) Center of the University of Maryland Baltimore County, is offering a limited number of graduate student research opportunities through its Graduate Student Summer Program (GSSP). This prestigious program is in its eighth year and is designed to stimulate interest in interdisciplinary Earth sciences studies by enabling selected students to carry out an intensive research project at GSFC's Earth Sciences Division, which can be applied to the student's graduate thesis. Details

The Summer Research Program in Life Sciences and Technology at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), in collaboration with the Centre for Integrative Genomics of the University of Lausanne, will offer intensive research training opportunities to undergraduate students interested in research careers in life sciences (including engineering). Each student will be matched with a specific laboratory based on the student's interest and background. The student will be working as a member of the research group for a period of nine weeks. Website Developer/Programmer. This position has the purpose of developing a social networking website that engineers can use to collaborate on engineering projects. The goal of the project is to promote open, collaborative design by creating a web portal similar to SourceForge or GitHub but geared toward the engineering design world. The position will be working closely with a team consisting of professors and graduate students from 5 universities that have extensive careers in engineering design, hence providing the undergraduate student with an opportunity to gain experience in research. BPA is looking for students who are interested in a summer internship with the possibility of a full time position upon successful graduation and an offer from BPA. We are looking for students with at least one year left before graduation. Please bring your resume and a copy of your unofficial transcript to the session if you are interested. Fermilab selects approximately fifteen college students to participate in the Summer Internships in Science and Technology for Minority Students (SIST) program each year to help us develop a richer understanding of the fundamental properties of matter. This internship program has been developed to familiarize select college students with opportunities at the frontier of scientific research and to provide experiences that support their choice of science as a career. The twelve-week program consists of a work assignment, an academic lecture series, and a final report that the intern presents orally to the Fermilab staff and submits to the Laboratory in writing. Oregon Department of Transportation, Graduate Electrical Engineer. There is currently 1 position available in Salem with the Bridge Unit. The Graduate Engineering Program (GEP) is ideally suited for recent graduates in Electrical Engineering (EE) to work on movable bridges, corrosion and cathodic protection, and preservation projects. Training is provided through rotational assignments in other disciplines like Construction, Design or Maintenance for up to one year as deemed appropriate.
