New Class!
NE/RHP 599 sec 001 Advanced Digital Spectrometer Design

The main objective of this course is to introduce state-of-the-art digital radiation detection instruments.

The course will have two components: (1) hardware and (2) FPGA code design.

  1. The hardware component will cover the main analog/digital features of a typical digital spectrometer.
  2. In the FPGA code design component, students will learn how to program a digital spectrometer to: (1) capture valid pulses on the fly using fast digital trapezoidal filters; (2) reject piled-up pulses;(3) reconstruct energy spectra; (4) discriminate pulse shapes; and (5) make a simple control module using a state machine to control all the necessary functions.

During the course, students will get hands-on experience using an advanced and high-speed digital spectrometer board (250 MHz, 12 bits) for developing and evaluating their FPGA design codes (in VHDL).

Not only for nuclear engineers and radiation health physicists, this course is also a great opportunity for future electrical engineers to get hands-on experience with a real advanced digital design application.
