The 2009 Knight News Challenge is year three of a contest awarding as much as $5 million a year for innovative ideas that develop platforms, tools and services to inform and transform community news, conversations, and information distribution and visualization. The Knight News Challenge is a contest run by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which has earmarked $25 million over a five-year period. The goal is to spur innovation in the delivery of information and news using digital media. Whether it's election coverage, crime statistics, little league scores, road conditions or anything else; the Foundation is looking for smart, innovative solutions that connect people with the news and information that matters to them most. If you have a great idea that will improve local online news, deepen community engagement, bring Web 2.0 tools to local neighborhoods, develop publishing platforms and standards to support local conversations or innovate how we visualize, experience or interact with information, we'd like to see it. You have the opportunity to win funding for your project and support within a vibrant community of media, tech, and community-oriented people who want to improve the world. There are three rules to follow to apply to the 2008-09 Knight News Challenge: (A) use or create digital, open-source technology as the code base; (B) serve the public interest; and (C) benefit one or more specific geographic communities. The Knight Foundation places a high priority on engaging young people to shape their own future.
