This event is shorter and more personal than the University-wide graduation and is tailored to the faculty and students of our school. OSU To Tackle Solar Future in New “Energy Frontier Research Center”
Researchers in the College of Engineering and College of Science at OSU will receive a five-year, $3 million grant to help form a “Center for Inverse Design.” This innovative concept uses theory and computation along with other experimental methods to more rapidly identify the advanced materials that can make solar power less costly and more efficient. The Willamette Angel Conference is coming up on Thursday, May 14 at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center. It will be an all day event, including Dave Hersch from Jive Software as the Keynote speaker; a commercialization panel from OSU, Onami, HP and others; and 5 companies presenting long pitches. Up to 10 companies will be presenting in an "IgniteAngel" Style - 13 slides, 15 seconds per slide. Rob Wiltbank from Willamette University will be talking about why Angel Investing is cool. In this session, we will demonstrate simple ways to improve and optimize your code that can boost execution speed by orders of magnitude. We will also address common pitfalls in writing M-code, explore the use of the MATLAB Profiler to find bottlenecks, and briefly introduce the use of Parallel Computing Toolbox and MATLAB Distributed Computing Server to solve computationally and data-intensive problems on multicore computers and clusters.

OSU Alumni Association Community Day of Service
Get your work gloves on and help us take the community service spirit of Beaver Nation to the streets! Saturday, May 16, 2009 is a day for Beavers to get together and get busy helping. Alumni, students and friends of OSU will work together in multiple cities - Portland, Seattle, Bend, Corvallis and at two locations in the San Francisco Bay area - during what will become an annual OSUAA day of service. The Corvallis project is at the Children's Farm Home, where we'll be doing work in two areas. In the community garden: Building wooden raised vegetable beds, tearing out and rebuilding counter slats for the greenhouse area, clean-up around greenhouse area, plant vegetable beds. For the therapeutic horse program: Replacing wire fencing, moving hay bales, fixing supports in riding arena, general maintenance of area. The project runs from 9:00 am to noon. Course Portfolios

Course portfolios are powerful tools for capturing and making visible the intellectual work that faculty engage in as they plan their learning outcomes and teach to these outcomes. This workshop will introduce two types of course portfolios constructed to document and track student learning in a specific course over time. By conducting an in-depth analysis of the teaching and learning process, the course portfolio endeavors to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Returning in 2009, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Google Scholarship will fund eleven scholarships at $10,000.00 each. This scholarship is for students majoring in computer science and computer engineering. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2009.

Catching the Dream MESBEC Scholarship Program. The purpose of the Catching the Dream (CTD) (formerly the Native American Scholarship Fund, Inc.) is to improve the quality of life for Indian people through higher education. CTD is a grassroots organization, Indian-run and reservation-oriented. CTD raises funds to provide scholarships to high-achieving American Indians in the fields critical to the economic, environmental, educational, political, and cultural development of Indian Communities. The scholarship awards are in the form of grants. Scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 per academic year. Priority is given to students entering the math, engineering, science, business, education, and computers (MESBEC) fields. Details

Undergraduate research assistant needed for an exciting research project that investigates combining human feedback with Artificial Intelligence. The primary responsibilities include programming algorithms in Java and writing scripts to parse experimental data. The undergraduate research assistant may also contribute written portions to a research publication.
