Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Think Out Loud,” a radio talk show that invites listeners to comment by phone or e-mail, comes to OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport June 16 for a discussion about wave energy. The episode is part of the series’ ongoing feature, “The Switch,” which is exploring energy options. Taping of the program, which is scheduled for broadcast the following day, starts at 7 p.m. sharp in the HMSC Visitor Center’s Hennings Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p. m., and seating in the 160-seat auditorium is first-come, first served. The Switch: Oregon Well Situated For Ocean Energy
In OPB’s on-going series The Switch we’ve looked at sources of renewable energy that are already producing power -- like wind and solar. But there’s one source, ocean power -- from waves or the tide -- that remains doggedly attached to the drawing board. OPB

University Rover Challenge
The Oregon State University robotics team took home first-place honors in the 2008 University Rover Challenge. OSU wasn’t able to defend its title in the 2009 challenge, which took place May 28-30, but the team finished a respectable fourth with 121 points. Corvallis Gazette-Times

Student Wins Google Scholarship
Sarah Cooley, a junior double majoring in computer science and electrical and computer engineering at Oregon State University, is the recipient of a Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Cooley, one of only 20 students in the nation to win this prestigious scholarship, will receive a $10,000 award for the 2009-2010 academic year. Kyle Rector, a senior double majoring in electrical and computer engineering and computer science, was named a finalist for the scholarship and received a $1,000 award. EECS

Faculty Research Assistant, Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing. The purpose of this position is to provide biocomputing research support, software development, and network/system support for the Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing (CGRB). Responsibilities and duties include collaborative research and development of methods for highthroughput sequencing data analysis; administration and development of CGRB networks and public/in-house systems, web-accessible ordering system, and other web-based biocomputing resources; collaborative development and maintenance of biocomputing and research software and hardware infrastructure and in-house data acquisition systems; and assistance and collaboration with CGRB-affiliated faculty and laboratories to develop and test biocomputing methods and pipelines, and to assist in preparation of grant proposals.
