OSU researchers hit $252M in funding
Oregon State University officials said Monday its researchers landed more than $252 million in external funding during the 2008-09 school year. OSU also announced a deal with Intel Corp. that will allow the company, which employs 15,500 workers in Hillsboro, to more quickly obtain necessary licenses for patents. Portland Business Journal
OSU Seeing More Private And Federal Money As State Support Fades
Oregon State University announced Monday that it accumulated a quarter of a billion dollars in research money last year. OSU finds itself raking in private and federal money, at the same it’s grappling with deep state budget cuts. OPB
Record Number of Oregon State Engineering Faculty Receive 2009 NSF CAREER Awards
Five faculty in the College of Engineering at Oregon State University have been recognized this year with prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Awards, each of which provides funding of at least $400,000 for a new research project with an educational/outreach component. Prior to 2009, no more than three OSU engineering faculty have won CAREER Awards in the same year. College of Engineering

During the annual fall breakfast on September 16th, the College of Engineering recognized and honored eleven faculty, staff, and students for their exemplary work and service during the past year. Seeking Start-ups to Pitch "Ignite Eugene"
Oct 19th is the deadline to submit your executive summary and presentation slides for a chance at pitching on Nov 19th at the "Ignite Eugene" Smart-ups Pub-Talk. Five start-up companies will be selected to deliver their business plan Ignite-style (13 slides, slides automatically advance every 15 seconds = 3.5 minutes to pitch your business plan)!
This is a fun, competitive and educational event that can open doors for your emerging growth start-up company. If you missed our last Ignite competition in Corvallis you should view the videos on our Smart-ups Community.
Interested in electronics, programming, mechanical design, building things? The OSU Robotics Club likely has something for you. For engineering majors, robotics club gives is a great place to apply what you learn in the classroom to fun, real world applications. OSURC has been promoting robotics at OSU since 2007. We host robotics workshops and monthly competitions to provide opportunities for new students to learn about and get involved in robotics. We also participate in several annual international robotics competitions. Membership is open to all OSU students, regardless of academic major or robotics experience. The International Degree and Education Abroad office has a lot of wonderful events coming up this fall and new options that we want to share with you.
(new) Directed Study Option: If your students are wishing to complete an independent study project abroad, they may sign up for the “Directed Study Option.” This allows them to register for their abroad experience through the IDEA office, adjust their financial aid as needed and enroll in the overseas insurance plan. (new) Petition Program: For students who do not find a program currently on the OSU study abroad approved list suitable to their academic needs, they may petition for approval of a different program. 15 Survival Skills for Instructors
Oct. 1, 10 am – 12 pm
This session will be of particular interest to instructors new to teaching, but serves as an excellent review of some of the best practices used in classrooms today. Dr. Peter Saunders, CTL Director, will discuss and answer questions on some of the most critical aspects of teaching in higher learning. Issues such as establishing the teaching/learning environment, discipline in the classroom, effective teaching behaviors and motivation will be addressed. Details and registration
Discover Your Teaching Philosophy
Oct. 16, 1 - 3:30 pm
This workshop will be of particular interest to faculty and graduate teaching assistants preparing a teaching portfolio and who wish to create a statement of their teaching philosophy. All faculty and GTAs who teach, hold assumptions about what it means to teach. Ask a dozen instructors and you will hear a range of answers that describe guiding, facilitating, telling, showing, planning, helping, directing and so forth. Faculty and GTAs will come away from this workshop with a concise statement of their own teaching philosophy. Attendees are encouraged to bring syllabi of courses they teach. Details and registration
Understanding and Working With Contemporary Students
Oct. 22, 10 am - 12 pm
This session will focus on cultivating a better understanding of the new generation of students and how they make meaning of the world. Specifically, we will explore how students tend to make decisions, what and who influence them most, and what are their media habits. All of these issues influence how they approach the university experience and their expectations of learning environments. Details and registration
Austin Entrepreneurship Program Idea Challenge
November 10, 6-7:30 p.m., Kelley Engineering 1003. The Idea Challenge is an opportunity to pitch your business idea or come hear other students pitch their ideas to a panel of experts. Find out if your idea has what it takes to go forward. Great preparation for the 2010 Enterprise Challenge where the possible prize money totals $17,500. Winners of the Idea challenge will receive $50 and will be paired with a mentor to prepare for The Enterprise Challenge to be held on April 16, 2010. Upsilon Pi Epsilon Student Award for Academic Excellence
The Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) wishes to encourage academic excellence for students in the computing discipline. The UPE initiated this award with the IEEE Computer Society, as the largest association of computer professionals, to raise the importance of academic achievement in our future computer professionals. Up to four awards of $500 each are given each year to competition winners. All graduate and undergraduate students who are IEEE Computer Society members, and full-time students at an academic institution are eligible. Deadline for submission is October 31 of each year. Lance Stafford Larson Student Scholarship Best Student Paper Contest
In 1983, the Lance Stafford Larson award was established by the Larson family in memorial for their son, who died in an electrical accident while an undergraduate at the University of Maryland. The Larson family, which includes IEEE Past President Robert Larson, created this award to encourage students to develop excellence in their communication skills and to motivate students toward achievement in the field of Computer Science. One award of $500 is given each year to the first place winner. First, second, and third place winners also receive a certificate of commendation and a writing implement.
