Abstract

Simple thermodynamic arguments are used to investigate the oxidation of CuInSe2 and the possible chemical reactions at the CdS---CuInSe₂ interface. Reaction products are predicted for the oxidation of CuInSe₂ and the oxidation of CdS and for reactions between CdS and CuInSe₂, as well as between CdS and the CuInSe₂ native oxide. It is suggested that the oxidation of CdS is possibly associated with the partial improvement in the response of CdS---CuInSe₂ solar cells with annealing treatments in an oxygen ambient.
