EECS and MIME Industry Reception

FAQs for Companies

1) Is this event like the Senior Dinner last October?
Not exactly. It's designed to be a social mixer much like last October's event, but instead of a formal sit-down dinner, this event features an informal hors d'oeuvres social time followed by two break-out sessions where you'll meet with smaller groups of students who want to learn more about your organization.

This event also open to a much broader group of students. EECS, ME, MatSci and IME students at all levels, including undergraduate and graduate (Freshmen - PhD) are encouraged to attend.

And to give you a chance to meet our EECS and MIME faculty and learn more about our research and eduational programs, we are holding an industry-faculty meet-and-greet held prior to the student reception (5:00-5:30).

2) Who else will be at the Reception?
Along with EECS and MIME students, other organizations are registering for the Industry Reception. To see who has registered so far, click on the About the Companies link and review the companies listed.

3) How many people from our company should attend the Reception?
Companies typically bring two people, but it is up to you. In most cases, you'll be meeting in a small conference room for the breakout sessions, so the fewer people you bring, the more seats will be available for students who want to meet with you.

On the other hand with two reps, you can "tag team" during the evening, and you'll have more opportunities for one-on-one interactions with students.

4) Do the students sign up to meet us? Or do we get to pick who we meet with?
The students will sign up to meet with you. Students typically are assigned to the companies that most interest them, but occasionally, students who cannot be placed with their first-choice company may be assigned to another group.

Expect to meet with two groups of approximately six students during the evening, plus those you mingle with during the widely attended student reception.

5) I have questions about the Engineering Career Fair.
Contact Career Services at 541.737.4085 or visit their web page at oregonstate.edu/career/

6) Do I need a parking permit?
Parking permits are required only if you arrive on campus before 5:00 PM. We are forwarding you an ivory parking permit allowing you to park in any student or faculty lot. (But do not park in metered, reserved, or handicapped spaces.) Display the permit on your dash on the driver's side. If the permit does not arrive in time, let us know as soon as you arrive at the Industry Reception so we can assist you.

7) What is the dress code?
Business casual.

8) I need a hotel.
Many of our guests prefer

9) What topics should we discuss in the breakout sessions with the students?
The primary goal here is to share information with the students that will help them learn about their employment (and internship) options and make informed decisions. Here are some discussion angles you might want to consider:

  • Share general information about your organization. What do the students know about your company?
  • How would you describe your company's culture?
  • How big is your organization?
  • If your organization is not in Oregon, describe what your region is like. What kinds of engineers/scientists do you hire within your organization and what do those employees do?
  • If your organization has multiple sites (in different geographic locations), what are the opportunities and expectations for employee transfers among sites?
  • Describe the benefits of joining your company.
  • Tell students what your organization looks for in a prospective recruit.
  • What general pointers can you give the students for interviewing? What kinds of questions should they ask employers, etc.
  • What kind of background or experience do you look for from new college grads?
  • Are you hiring? What job openings do you have and how do people apply?
  • Are you hiring interns? What internships are available and how do students apply?
  • Give the students advice on creating an effective resume.
