Graduate Studies: Admissions

Important notice! The application period for Fall 2010 admission is September 1, 2009–January 15, 2010

The School of EECS offers outstanding opportunities for graduate studies in the fields of electrical and computer engineering (ECE) and computer science (CS). Generally, we only consider applications for Fall term. Winter or spring term applications are considered on a case by case basis with prior permission from an EECS faculty member.

Applications for admission and financial assistance for Fall 2010 will be accepted beginning September 1, 2009. Applications must be submitted and all materials received by the School of EECS no later than January 15, 2010 in order to be complete. Incomplete applications may not be considered for admission or funding.

Oregon State EECS excels in collaborative research and preparing work-ready graduates. Corvallis is a great place to live, and the friendly and skilled people here help make EECS a truly enjoyable place to further your education. Have a look around, and use our site to organize your application.

Minimum Admission Requirements
To become an Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science graduate student you must be admitted to Oregon State University through both the Graduate School and the School of EECS. The faculty in EECS examine the material submitted to determine adequacy of academic background and to decide whether facilities in the School are adequate for the expressed aims of the student. The Graduate School will determine whether the general university conditions for admission have been met. Applicants will be notified by the Graduate School as to the action taken. A critical consideration in the decision is whether the applicant's academic objectives can be satisfactorily fulfilled. EECS does not have the capacity to accommodate all applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements.

Prior Degree
Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. International students must have completed the equivalent of a four-year American baccalaureate degree.

Grade Point Average (GPA)
EECS requires a minimum “B” average (3.00 GPA on a 4.00-point scale) on the last two years of undergraduate work and any work completed thereafter.

Effective July 1, 2008 for Fall 2009 admission or later, if the student has completed his or her baccalaureate degree in a country that is a signatory of the Bologna Declaration, then

  • A baccalaureate degree of at least three years duration with a B average (equivalent 3.00 on a U.S. 4.00 grading scale) in the last two years, plus all subsequent graded course work;

OR:

  • A baccalaureate degree of at least three years duration with a two-year (equivalent to 45-quarter credits) graduate degree.

GRE
EECS requires the General GRE test for most, but not all, students. Scores cannot be more than five (5) years old at the time when graduate studies start.

Applicants to Computer Science: The general GRE is required for all applicants. The minimum requirement is a combined score of 1200 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections. The subject test is not required.

Applicants to Electrical and Computer Engineering: The general GRE is required for all international applicants (non U.S. citizens) unless a baccalaureate or advanced degree has been granted from a U.S. university. The minimum requirement is a combined score of 1300 on the Quantitative and Analytical portions. Under the new GRE format, the minimum requirements are a score of 700 in the Quantitative portion and 4.0 in the Analytical Writing portion. The subject test is not required.

Language Proficiency
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, including those transferring from English speaking colleges and universities. (If in doubt about whether TOEFL is required of applicants from your country, send email to graduate.admissions@oregonstate.edu.) The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants receiving a degree from a U.S. university. Scores cannot be more than two (2) years old at the time when graduate studies start. The minimum requirement is 600 written or 250 computer based. The minimum TOEFL iBT requirement is 80 with a minimum score of 18 in each of the four tests (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). If the TOEFL is not available in your country, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) may be used as an alternative to the TOEFL for assessing language proficiency. The minimum requirement is 7.0.

Statement of Objectives
Applicants must include a description of their objectives in pursuing the advanced degree. This should be a brief (maximum of one page when printed) summary of the applicant's career goals, research interests, and pertinent experience. This information is submitted as part of the electronic admission form (see below).

Recommendation Letters
Three letters of professional reference are required from former professors or employers familiar with the applicant's technical ability. Particularly valuable are letters that assess the applicant's preparation and ability to complete a research project. Applicants with a master's degree should include the major professor as one reference. Do not submit paper letters of recommendation. Letters must be submitted electronically (see below).

Course Equivalency Form
Applicants for degrees in Computer Science must identify the courses they have taken using a special Course Equivalency Form. This must be submitted electronically (see below).
