County’s energy-saving measures pay off

Although the price of natural gas and electricity have steadily risen over the last five years, Linn County has continued to come in under budget for its energy purchases due to conservation measures. Oregon State University senior Alex Ridley, 23, is credited for the success of many of the county’s projects. Ridley’s major is electrical and computer engineering. Making High Performance Computing Special -- the ACM Way

New opportunity for graduate studies at Brandeis: IGERT "Geometry and Dynamics"

The new Brandeis IGERT grant "Geometry and Dynamics" is an interdisciplinary grant in the mathematical/theoretical sciences, based on the fact that much of the mathematical/theoretical work at Brandeis use the same set of techniques and concepts, most especially: the theory of stochastic processes, quantum and statistical field theory, geometry and topology, and the theory of complex dynamical systems. US citizens or permanent residents who are applying for PhD programs in biology, chemistry, computer science, international economics and finance, mathematics, neuroscience, psychology, or physics are eligible to apply. In recognition of the impressive student talent coming from FIRST programs around the state, the College of Engineering at Oregon State has increased our FIRST scholarship offering from one award to five awards beginning with the 2011-2012 award cycle. To qualify, students must have participated in a successful FRC team. Criteria are based upon academics, involvement, leadership development, and letters of recommendation. Each scholarship is $1,200 and non-renewable. Details

AAAS Diplomacy, Security, and Development Fellowships are designed to infuse scientific and technical expertise into policy development and program planning, implementation and evaluation in the areas of: foreign policy and international trade, treaty engagement, and multilateral cooperation; disaster preparedness and response; infrastructure, environmental, cyber and health security, terrorism and warfare prevention, and nonproliferation; and international aid, capacity building, and development assistance.
