EECS & MIME Industry Reception, Wednesday, February 22, 5:30 - 7:45 pm, Kelley Engineering Center. Graduating this year? Looking for a summer internship? Now is the perfect time to start your search for the internship, summer job, or permanent job you have been looking for. Even if you are not graduating, this is a great chance to practice your networking skills, shake off those nerves, and learn more about companies (many of whom ARE hiring) so you can make a more informed decision when selecting an employer later on. Registration is required and closes February 15 or when we run out of seats. This event is free for students (undergrads and grads) and gives you a chance to meet industry professionals and learn more about their organizations. Details

DISCOVERY CHANNEL SEEKING AMERICA’S TOP INVENTORS, MACHINISTS, AND ENGINEERS TO COMPETE FOR A HUGE GRAND PRIZE! The Discovery Channel is looking for America’s most creative and daring techies, machinists, inventors, and engineers to design, build, and BLAST their way to a grand prize on a new competition TV show called TOP ENGINEER. A handful of lucky men and women will be chosen to take on exciting challenges from various engineering filed a the state-of-the-art WET Design facilities in California. You MUST be able to design, build, test, and integrate an idea into a final product that WORKS. These will be fast-paced, hands-on, VISCERAL challenges! We are looking for visual effects experts, accomplished home shop machinists, contractors, and engineers with backgrounds in electrical, civil, structural, or mechanical engineering. Microsoft Studios has just announced that they will be sponsoring a special Kinect Fun Labs Challenge as part of the Microsoft World Wide Imagine Cup competition. The competition consists of two rounds; an idea/design round, and a software development round. The top 100 student teams in Round 1 will receive a free Kinect sensor and advance to Round 2. A couple of key dates:

  • February 14, 2012: Live Meeting Q&A with the Kinect Labs Captain Dan Waters
  • March 6, 2012: Team Registration and Round One Design Submittal

The Kinect Fun Labs Challenge is a great opportunity for students in technology clubs, special topics courses, or who want to get recognition for developing applications for the latest technologies. Microsoft’s Imagine Cup is one of the world’s largest student technology competitions, and this year’s events promise to be just as exciting and rewarding as last year. The Imagine Cup is a lot like the Olympics where competitors from all over the world compete in a variety of events for prestige and big prizes. Many countries (like the US) hold local eliminations for the software design category, but it’s a international smack-down for the game, phone, cloud, and Kinect events. What makes the Imagine Cup different is it’s theme: all of the projects are designed to “help solve the world’s toughest [social] problems.” Details

Intel Innovators is an Intel-sponsored Facebook platform and contest that showcases 18-24 year-old innovators with game-changing, technology-based ideas. Every month, Intel will award up to $100K to the best ideas based on support from members of the Facebook community and a live pitch where the top five innovators face-off for the prize money. Details

SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

The Zonta Service Foundation of Corvallis is accepting applications for its 2012-2013 scholarships. A minimum of ten $2,700 scholarships are being offered. One of the scholarships is reserved for a female student focused on a career in technology, engineering, or science. Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students at Linn Benton Community College or Oregon State University who have resumed their studies after a minimum one-year break in their education. Preference will be given to older-than-average students, students with family responsibilities, and those with financial need. Details

Google Scholarships in North America - Now accepting applications. As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to advancing computing and technology, we are pleased to support the work of our partner organizations in providing scholarships to students studying computer science. Scholarship recipients will each receive a $10,000 scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year and will be invited to attend the all-expenses-paid annual Google Scholars’ Retreat at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA. Scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of the applicants’ academic background and their demonstrated passion for computer science. Details

“Sensing and Signaling” Reseach Experience for Undergrads, University of Tennessee. The BCMB Department at UTK will once again offer a special summer program for undergraduates interested in research. The aim of this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is to provide hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate students majoring in the sciences, with an introduction to cutting-edge research in the broad area of “Sensing and Signaling.” The team of REU investigators represents a multidisciplinary ensemble of Cell Biologists, Geneticists, Biochemists, and Biophysicists who are taking modern approaches to the analysis of how signals are perceived and transduced in myriad biological systems. Application Developer, Intel. In this position, you will be developing, maintaining, testing, and documenting applications, primarily using, but not limited to SAP's development tools. Our applications are developed for many different business groups at Intel, which requires we adapt to the business group needs. Some groups are in need of mobile applications, thus the developer will need to use the appropriate language to deliver their needed applications, such as Java, HTML5, .NET, and/or what fits. We also design and develop applications in the standard SAP development programming language, ABAP. Details
