MIT and others launch a tech education revolution

Four programs deliver traditional -- and nontraditional -- education options for techies
In June, Oregon State University will offer an entire computer science degree online. It will be possible to complete the program in as little as 12 months, but students can extend that to several years. The program will cost about $15,000 and is intended for people who already hold bachelor's degrees in other areas, such as anthropology, biology or English. PC Advisor (UK)

PhD student Bill Cowell received the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry 2011 Pivotal Scholars Award, recognizing his contributions toward advancing innovation in sustainable materials. Some of his work was featured recently in several publications.

USAF Seminar

The US Air Force has immediate openings for a program called the TECHNICAL DEGREE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM (TDSP). They will be hosting a seminar with IEEE on Thursday April 26th at 5pm in the Kelley Engineering Center 1005. We will be providing food for the first 40 students. The seminar will be talking about the Air Force in general and hopefully we will be having an Air Force engineer joining us. The TDSP program is targeted at juniors who will be seniors next year and supplies dollars while you are in school. Details

Volunteer at the 2012 Engineering Expo

This year the Engineering Expo is happening on Friday, May 18th. The College of Engineering needs student and staff volunteers to help out on May 17th and May 18th with setting-up and tearing-down, giving guided tours and managing info booths. Anita Borg Institute scholarship applications for the 2012 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing

The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology announced today that scholarship applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference, which brings together women from all aspects of computer science and engineering. This year’s conference will be held October 3-6, 2012 in Baltimore, MD. The deadline for scholarship applications is May 15, 2012. Full scholarships cover conference registration, lodging for four nights, and travel expense reimbursement. Partial scholarships are also available. While the largest portion of scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, junior faculty and members of non-governmental organizations and non-profits are also eligible to apply. SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS

Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Paul Evan Peters Fellowship. The fellowship will assist students pursuing graduate studies in the information sciences, librarianship, or closely related field, that advance the frontiers of digital information and technology. If awarded the fellowship, recipients must complete at least 6 credit hours of course work per semester during the year(s) the fellowship is awarded. The fellowship will be in the amount of $5,000 per year, to be awarded two consecutive years. Details

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 DOE National Laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects related to ongoing programs. Details

Central Web-Student Software Engineer, OSU University Administrative Business Center. This software engineer/PHP Developer position will assist Central Web Services in installation, testing and configuration of web based applications that will be rolled into production, and perform php development as necessary to serve that function. One primary role will be with WordPress installations, testing and plugin development. The other primary role will be in systems level scripts using Python for server level monitoring. Details

The technical writer will serve to write technical documentation, meet with developers and translate technical specifications to user documentation. Cypress Semiconductor (Lynnwood, WA ) - PSoC division is looking to hire energetic analog/mixed signal design students, for Internship and also full-time permanent positions. The intern/coop task would begin early summer onwards. The Intern/Coop would work with senior designers in architecting & designing reconfigurable analog blocks for a variety of functions like ADC, DAC, Filters, amongst others. The full time permanent position is for a NCG (New College Grad), who would be interested in working with reconfigurable & fixed function analog/mixed signal designs at circuit, sub system & full chip level, for the PSoC group. Intern, Intel. As an intern in the SLV team, you will work with other validation engineers to assemble systems in the lab, set up the system, install operating systems and bring up the system. You will be validating the system features such as GUI interface, set up clusters (Windows and Linux) and test system functionality.
