New LED technology boosts Wi-Fi bandwidth tenfold
Researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) have developed a new technology that can increase the bandwidth of WiFi systems by 10 times, using LED lights to transmit information. “In addition to improving the experience for users, the two big advantages of this system are that it uses inexpensive components, and it integrates with existing WiFi systems,” said Thinh Nguyen, an OSU associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. Nguyen worked with Alan Wang, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, to build the first prototype. BizLED

InFocus names new CEO, plans 'significant investments'
Tigard digital projector company InFocus Corp. named a new chief executive Tuesday, putting board member Mark Housley in the top job. The company said it plans "significant investments" in new products and personnel, but did not provide any details. InFocus was once among Oregon's largest technology companies, pioneering the market for digital projectors. The Oregonian

California tech firm to open Portland office, hire up to 230
Menlo Park, California-based GuideSpark is coming to Portland. The firm develops video content used by human resources professionals to help explain benefits, compensation, health care reform and other potentially complicated topics. "After an exhaustive search, we chose to set up business in Portland, a thriving city that met all of our criteria: an educated, innovative and technology-savvy workforce, combined with a stable and attractive business environment. We look forward to our continued expansion in Oregon," said GuideSpark CEO Keith Kitani, in a release. Portland Business Journal

Urban Airship looks to land in the Big Data space
Urban Airship's first new product under CEO Brett Caine could launch the company firmly into the big data space. The product, called Urban Airship Connect, allows companies and brands to easily integrate the mobile data and information collected by Urban into other marketing and business intelligence platforms. Puppet Labs unveils one of its biggest product additions in 4 years
IT automation software maker Puppet Labs is unveiling a major upgrade to its Enterprise service that will allow customers to more quickly model and deploy complicated business applications. Called Puppet Application Orchestration, its the “most significant and ambitious addition to Puppet Enterprise since it was introduced four years ago,” said spokesman Justin Dorff. VentureWell E-Team Program Student Grants
VentureWell supports the development of technological innovations that are scalable, commercially promising, and have a positive impact on society and/or the environment. This program is for US-based college or university student-led teams, not for individual inventors. VentureWell encourages proposals that involve students and advisors from engineering, science, business, design, and liberal arts disciplines. Strong E-Team projects consist of multidisciplinary advisors, mentors with relevant industry experience and connections, strong partnerships (required if you are working outside the US), and experiential learning opportunities. IEEEXtreme 24-Hour Programming Competition

IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in which teams of IEEE Student members—advised and proctored by an IEEE member, and often supported by an IEEE Student Branch—compete in a 24-hour time span against each other to solve a set of programming problems. As a student member there are lots of great reasons to participate - fun, fame, prizes and to prove your coding skills to the world in this well-known international competition. Cognitive Computing Challenge
This is a $200,000 USD incentive prize to build a cognitive system that can read a document, then accurately load a database with what it finds. Essentially, to teach a computer to mimic the human brain. Currently, a huge amount of information is locked in written documents which is read and analyzed manually by humans. The solution to this challenge will eliminate repetitive tasks, reduce time and minimize errors. This world-wide challenge is sponsored by Dynamic Risk, whose focus is to improve pipeline safety and reduce environmental impact. However, this technology has broader applications across industries such as healthcare, security and emergency response. Submission deadline: January 11, 2016. Details
