Abstract

The Earth is a water planet, with two thirds of its surface covered by water. Exploration of the mysterious water world has never ceased in human history, yet at the time being, less than one percent of this alien environment has been explored, since it cannot be probed through satellites nor visited by humans for a long time. Driven by the unprecedented development of wireless communications and networking in terrestrial radio applications, underwater wireless networked systems, especially underwater acoustic networked systems, are envisioned to revolutionize underwater exploration through providing long-term, continuous and real-time observation of the aquatic environment. Nevertheless, numerous challenges are posed by the harsh environment, such as large fluctuation of underwater communication channels and low propagation speed of acoustic waves in water. Among these challenges, performance of underwater acoustic networking is primarily interference limited, due to the presence of multiple network users and marine animals, such as dolphins. 

In this talk, two pieces of work will presented that address different interferences in practical underwater acoustic networks. The first work deals with external interference, as evidenced by unknown sonar interferences present in an experiment conducted at the Atlantic Test and Evaluation Center. A novel parameterized interference cancellation approach is developed, which relies on a fundamental mathematical tool – the Fourier series, to compactly represent the interference, and then mitigates the interference in an iterative receiver framework. The second work addresses asynchronous multiuser transmissions in underwater acoustic networking, where interferences from multiple users are aggregated into a single interference and mitigated with iterative receiver processing.

At the end of this talk, Ms. Wang will describe the recent progress on an open-access underwater acoustic test bed at the University of Connecticut. She will also share her thoughts on her future research development.

Speaker Bio

Zhaohui Wang received the B.S. degree from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2006 and the M.S. degree from the Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing in 2009, both in electrical engineering. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Connecticut (UConn), Storrs.

Her general research interests are in wireless communications, networking, and signal processing. During her Ph.D. program, her major focus is on underwater acoustic communications and networking in cyber-aquatic systems (CAS). She has authored and co-authored 13 journal papers and 17 conference papers in the field. Currently, she is collaborating with Prof. Shengli Zhou at UConn in writing a book, titled “OFDM in Underwater Acoustic Communications”, which is scheduled to appear on market by middle 2013 (John Wiley & Sons). Ms. Wang has received multiple honors and awards, including the First Place in the Physics Contest of College Students, Beijing, China, 2003, and the Second Place in the Electronic Design Contest, Beijing, China, 2005. In March 2013, she was honored with the Women of Innovation Award by the Connecticut Technology Council. She is a student member of IEEE, has served as technical reviewers for many premier journals and conferences, and has been recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer of 2012 by IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering.
