Herlocker's research work centers on integrating intelligence and usability into information systems. At the University of Minnesota, he was part of a group of researchers that developed a collaborative filtering-based recommender system which was licensed to Net Perceptions Inc, and was the lead designer and developer for the MovieLens web-based movie recommender (www.movielens.org). More recently, he co-founded the TaskTracer research project with Tom Dietterich. In addition to receiving significant federal research funding from agencies such as the NSF and the Department of Defense, Herlocker continues to be deeply involved with research commercialization activities and has co-founded two software companies - MusicStrands (now MyStrands) and Smart Desktop, Inc. (bought by Pi Corporation) to commercialize technology developed at the University.He has published a number of scientific papers on collaborative filtering and intelligent user interfaces, and has been awarded the prestigious NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award and the OSU College of Engineering Englebrecht Young Faculty award. Herlocker is a member of the ACM, ACM SIGCHI, ACM SIGIR, the IEEE, and the IEEE Computer Society.
